Diplomats expelled 'at behest of the US'
By Eleanor Mayne
Two European diplomats accused of holding secret talks with the Taliban
in Afghanistan were thrown out of the country following a complaint by
the US, intelligence officials in Kabul have told The Sunday Telegraph.
Mervyn Patterson, who is British, and Irish-born Michael Semple were
flown out of Kabul on Thursday after the Afghan government accused them
of "threatening national security".
The pair had been working for the United Nations and the European Union
respectively.
But according to a senior Afghan intelligence source, American
officials had been unhappy about meetings between the men and
high-level Taliban commanders in the volatile Helmand province.

Iraq on alert for Saddam anniversary
By PATRICK QUINN
Associated Press Writer
Hundreds of people, including many children, chanted slogans praising
Saddam Hussein on Sunday as they tossed flowers onto his tomb one year
after he was executed.
The muted anniversary of Saddam's death saw little violence, a far cry
from the blood spilled on the day the former Iraqi leader was executed
and the horrific wave of killing that ensued until the surge of U.S.
troops six months later.

Guantanamo prisoner dies of cancer: U.S.
An Afghan detainee has died from cancer at the prison camp at the U.S.
naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, authorities said on Sunday.
Abdul Razzak, 68, who was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for
colorectal cancer, was pronounced dead by a doctor at the base on
Sunday morning, the U.S. military said in a statement.
He was the fifth prisoner to die in captivity since the detention and
interrogation camp opened in 2002, Cmdr. Rick Haupt, a spokesman for
the military's Joint Task Force Guantanamo, told Reuters.
The other four deaths at Guantanamo, which currently holds about 290
prisoners, were the result of apparent suicides, according to the U.S.

By ARNALDO MUSA
The Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) may be closer than
ever from taking over the leadership of El Salvador, seized by the
extreme rightwing. Recent polls give the candidates of the former
guerrilla movement an eight to ten point advantage over the National
Republican Alliance (ARENA), in power for the last 18 years and lead
for the last 3 by current President Elias Antonio Saca.
