Arabs, Israel and World Opinion

THE RESULTS OF TWO INTERESTING OPINION POLLS HAVE BEEN RELEASED

By JOHN WHITBECK

The results of two interesting opinion polls have recently been released.

The annual Arab American Institute/Zogby International poll of attitudes in
five "pro-American" Arab states with "moderate" governments found that the
anti-American views of their populations had reached record levels.

The percentages now holding a negative view of the United States were 90%% in
Jordan, 87%% in Morocco, 83%% in Egypt, 82%% in Saudi Arabia and 68%% in
Lebanon.

The principal reasons cited by respondents for these negative views were
American policies with respect to Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon and Iran.

Survey: US Losing Arab Allies' Hearts and Minds

By Jim Lobe

Attitudes toward the United States reached new lows through most of the Arab
world over the past year, according to the findings of a major new survey
[.pdf] of five Arab countries released here Thursday by Zogby International
and the Arab American Institute (AAI).

Based on 3,500 face-to-face interviews of randomly selected adult
respondents in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Lebanon, the survey
found that the continuing deterioration in Washington's image was due
primarily to U.S. policies in the region, particularly with respect to Iraq,
Palestine, and, to a somewhat lesser extent, Lebanon.

Beirut deal eludes Moussa

Amr Moussa, the Arab League chief, has not succeeded in brokering a deal to
resolve Lebanon's political crisis.

At a press conference, he reported progress in his mediation but said that
more talks were required and he might have to return to Beirut to continue
his discussions with government and opposition leaders to agree on a
package.

Moussa, who arrived in Beirut on Tuesday, has been shuttling between rival
Lebanese leaders in an effort to end the crisis which worsened after the
Hezbollah-led opposition took to the streets to press its demand for veto
power in the government of Fouad Siniora, the prime minister.

Saudi Arabia warns if US leaves Iraq it will arm Sunnis

by Suzanne Goldenberg in Washington

IRAQ: King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia warned the US vice-president, Dick
Cheney, that the kingdom would provide money and arms to Sunni militias
in Iraq if America withdrew its troops from the country, it emerged
yesterday.

The conversation, during a visit by Mr Cheney to Riyadh last month, was
the most serious indication to date of Saudi concerns about a possible
massacre of the minority Sunni community in Iraq in the event of a
withdrawal of US forces, as well as rising Iranian influence in Iraq,
Lebanon, and the Palestinian territories.

Israel supports Arabs on N-power

By Abraham Rabinovich, Jerusalem

A DECLARATION by Arab Gulf states that they intend to pursue a nuclear
energy program has drawn a surprising welcome from Israeli officials.

Leaders of six Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, ordered a feasibility
study of a joint atomic energy program at the conclusion of a two-day summit
of the Gulf Co-operation Council in Riyadh.

The oil-rich countries, all predominantly Sunni Arab states, made it clear
their declaration was intended to prod the West into stopping Shia Iran from
gaining nuclear weapons, lest the Sunni Arab world also embark on a nuclear
arms race.

Foreigners arrested for plotting attacks

By NADIA ABOU EL-MAGD
Associated Press Writer

CAIRO, Egypt - Police have arrested an American, 11 Europeans and several
others from Arab countries for allegedly plotting terrorist attacks in
Middle Eastern countries including Iraq, the Interior Ministry said Monday.

The group was part of an Islamic militant terror cell that had adopted
extremist ideas and were living in Egypt under the guise of studying Arabic
and Islamic studies, the ministry said in a statement.

Along with the American, police arrested two Belgians, nine French and
several others from Egypt and other Arab countries including Tunisia and
Syria, the statement said.
