That would be the idea behind a fuel cell.

Better still, dynamos for brakes. Petrol/diesel driven vehicles
currently waste tremendous amounts of energy when slowing down -- all
that kinetic energy is converted into sound and heat. A much better
idea would be to convert that kinetic energy back into electrical
energy, for reuse when the car accelerates.
Not really viable until we stop using milk float motors (DC) and switch
over to AC motors, though. I vaguely remember General Motors developing
a DC to AC current converter; tested in a sports car running off six
car batteries, and it went like stink.
