  Planned Maintenance - Web Hosting

Author: Malcolm S. Muir
Date: Apr 21, 2008 09:36

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

We will be carrying out planned maintenance on our Web Hosting
Platforms as follows:

Friday April 25th at approximately 06:30 BST

At this time we will be upgrading the MySQL database service.
This will affect the following products:

Demon Web Hosting Standard
Demon Web Hosting Advanced
Demon Web Hosting Professional
Demon Web Hosting Entry (cost option only)

Dial-up and Homepages are however unaffected.

For a brief period during this work, MySQL databases will not
function. However, web pages and PHP scripts that do not
make calls on MySQL will continue to be served normally.

The reason for this maintenance work is to allow us to improve
stability of the MySQL database service. We will upgrade MySQL 4
database service from 4.0.17 to 4.0.30, the latest version on
that code branch.

  Demon Web Proxies / Caches

Author: Malcolm S. Muir
Date: Oct 22, 2007 02:34

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Please note that from Monday 12th November 2007 we will be closing
the Demon Web Proxies (also known as caches).

With the increase in bandwidth and capacity of web sites in recent
times, web proxies no longer serve as an effective means of
speeding up access to web content.

The current trend of web pages becoming larger and more
sophisticated is additionally reducing the effectiveness of such
proxies.

One noticeable effect is that fewer customers are now prepared to
configure their systems to use a web proxie.

Therefore we have decided that the resources currently used on web
proxies could be better used on other services for our customers.

Customers who currently use the Demon Web Caches must
reconfigure their systems to directly access remote sites before
the above date. Other customers will not be affected and need
take no action.

  Homepages Migration

Author: Malcolm S. Muir
Date: Jun 11, 2007 04:36

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

We will be migrating the customer Homepages service to new
servers between:

Tuesday 12th June and Thursday 14th June 2007

Customers should note the following:

From Tuesday 12th June the homepages FTP service
(homepages.demon.co.uk) will be suspended until the migration
is complete. This means that customers will be unable to update
the content of their homepages websites during this period.

We recommend that Homepages customers do not change their
passwords during the migration period. If you do change the
password during this period it might not be migrated, in which
case after migration your previous password will work and will
need to be changed again using the control panel at:

<https://www.admin.dwh.demon.net/>

Customers should note that we do not anticipate any interruption
in the availability of their web page content during the work.

On completion, the following are amongst the benefits available to
Homepages customers:

  Changes to Mail Relays

Author: Malcolm S. Muir
Date: Jun 6, 2007 08:53

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----

This announcement will not affect you if you use Dial Up, Home
Broadband, HomeOffice Broadband or any other Demon product where
email is collected by POP3.

We will be making some changes to the mail relays commencing:

Friday 8th June 2007

Starting on the above date we will be commencing on a programme
to replace the mail relay servers which form the backup MX hosts
for customers who have domains hosted with us.

These servers are intended to accept and relay email to hosting
customers when their own mail servers are unavailable, they are
not provided as a primary mail server.

Whilst the new mail relays will provide similar function to the
servers they replace, there will be some significant changes:

They will not act as a primary MX, as customers are required to
provide their own mail servers.

Compliance with RFC 2821 will be enforced. Details of RFC 2821
can be found at:

<ftp://ftp.demon.co.uk/pub/mirrors/internic/rfc/rfc2821.txt>
