Is the significant under-exposure deliberate?

Not deliberate as far as I was concerned. My first effort made the leaves
almost silhouetted, which was not what I intended. I therefore took it with
flash because I wanted the detail in the leaves. I am not sure what my FZ30
made of it in exposure terms!!

This is a software tonal adjustment, it's not the same as adjusting
the exposure using the camera's exposure compensation which actually
adjusts either the shutter speed or aperture depending on what
exposure mode you're using.

I never said it did, in fact most bitmap graphic applications do. You
really shouldn't be so defensive with PSP

Perhaps you implied it :-)

In an 'open' situation, I would not dare to defend
PSP against the might of PS, and more specifically
when it comes to features such as Raw Conversion
and Photostitch.

However, this is a PSP forum and I don't find it
helpful that you demonstrated your point using PS
when it could have been done in PSP.

I was careful to mention PSP had a similar utility in the Histogram
Adjustment. I don't have PSP installed on this machine therefore
couldn't demonstrate it.

I think most partake to show off their photographs. I see poeple here
using Lightroom and Photoshop and even Photopaint. There are very few
questions asked about PSP so I challenge the idea people come here to
learn.

Did you really imagine anyone thought it did?

PSP can't make tonal adjustments on a RAW file. Period.

Actually nothing "does a histogram adjustment". Instead the
colors of pixels in the image are altered, which in turn
leads to a modified histogram. A histogram is just a
frequency distribution statistic derived from image colors.
