Selection of a Whole
This is the short title I came up to fit the concept of examining any
subject and focusing in on only a part of the whole item therefore
isolating a vital portion of the larger total.
Bring the viewer into a selection.
If the subject matter were a face portrait then the item isolated might
be an eye and its eyebrow.
If its a tool or manufactured item then whatever your mind assesses as
the vital part of the tool or will become a creative photo.
If its a building look for a portion of the building that has a feature
which will be glorified.
There can be a creative approach to this with a landscape but might take
a bit more sleuthing and camera angle etc. The goal being one item that
is the main point of view and minimal other landscape items.
Light, shadow, angle of shot, creative minimalist selection will be the
judging criteria.

Oh dear, I'm hopeless at explaining things like this, I don't have your
technical knowledge nor your way of explanations.
I have several pre-sets I use and although they were in the new version once
I downloaded it, they just didn't seem the same. No matter how much I
adjusted the sliders, it seemed to give, for want of a better word, a
'rougher' image. I'm not bagging the product, it's probably more that I am
resistant to change, I get in a comfort zone and I like to stay there and I
don't have the time to play around too much, so it was easier to go back to
what I was used to, rather than persevere with something new.

You most certainly can.
LOL the last time I did drink wine, on the way home, I was pulled over by
the police and given a breathalyser test, I past of course, but it did give
me a fright for a few seconds, as it was before I retired from doing
deliveries and I sure needed my licence. :-)

Hi Spandex,
Permit me for paraphrasing but I believe you recently recommended
someone to under expose a high contrast scene to preserve highlight
detail while still possibly being able to drag some detail out of the
shadows. I would agree to some extent.
Photographic film, even slide/reversal film, has a shoulder & knee area
to their D-LogE curves so that both highlights & shadows are
"compressed" thus giving them a wide exposure range; in experiments I
have seen, a perfectly acceptable image was recoverable from negative
film overexposed by four stops or more, or underexposed by two.
Sensors in digital cameras are electronic devices and therefore clip
both highlights and shadows; there's no higher value than maximum and no
lower value than zero so surely there is very little shadow detail to be
recovered from something that is underexposed even though to the eye,
clipped shadows may be more acceptable than clipped highlights.
Not a criticism, merely commenting :-)
Michael

What a cute little guy!
How did you get him to sit still long enough to take the shot?
