Submitting a Document to a Commercial Printer -- pdf or other

Author: TaliesinSoft

I have been led to believe that the preferred way of submitting a document to
a commercial printer is as a pdf file, the reason being that such a file is
completely self-contained in regards to fonts and graphics and such.

However, there have been times, recently, when the commercial printer
requested the InDesign document and the accompanying support files, fonts and
illustrations and such.

Is there a reason why the printer wouldn't have preferred the pdf file?

Viewing PC files on a Mac

Author: eganders

I can ping the mac from the pc and the pc from the mac. I can't see
the files or PC printer from the mac even though I have allowed file
and printer sharing. The PC name is OFFICEPC and the group is MSHOME.
The Mac name is Ericsmac, but I can't find what the Mac thinks is the
local network group name. The Apple technical support web site seems
to want you to go to the Apple menu, choose System Preferences, go to
the View menu and choose accounts to find the Windows group name.
Well, I can't find a "view" menu.

Knowing that both can ping each other, what can you tell me about how I
can get each to view the other's files and the PC printer?

  Network printing=bad quality

Having finally figured out how to set up my Mac with a printer-server I
now have a new problem.
The print quality is simply appalling! I printed a small text-file, and
the letters were seemingly printed at low resolution with little ink.
Is this the result of not using the original printer driver? The
printer is a Canon S-500, and connected directly to the Mac via USB it
prints fine, but not via the printer-server.

I've asked around and have been told that I needed to use another
driver for a setup like this, so I downloaded the Gutenprint/CUPS
package and used the Canon S-500 driver.
What am I doing wrong?

Printing to a printer connected to a mac from a PC

I have a mac with a usb lexmarkc500 printer connected to it. I can
print fine using the mac that it's connected to and I can also print to
it from other macs in my network. I want to print to it from my win xp
pc. I can see the printer and connect to it from my xp machine in a few
ways.

1. I can browse the mac via network neighborhood and connect to it that
way
2. I can go through the add a new printer option in XP to add the the
printer and can connect that way

The issue is that I am connected but everytime I print from the xp
machine it does not print.

I need help. I am a windows convert learning.

  Sharing PC printer from Mac

Have a PC and Mac G4 hooked to the Internet through a Linksys router
using CAT 5 cable. Can get on the internet from both PC and Mac using
cable modem hooked to the router.

Have a PC with Windows XP and printer attached
Have PC printer sharing on
Have Zonealarm on PC
Can see Mac on network from PC, but can't see anything about the PC
from the Mac,
I can just see the name of the Mac from the PC, nothing else.

Can someone tell me the steps to get Mac to share/see the printer on
the PC?

As noted by Matt, hooking into the PDF workflow is the way to do this.

One commercial application that provides a generic duplex printing option
for *all* printers is Clickbook:

Printing to Canon MP830 via Airport

Author: MattA

I have an Intel MacBook running 10.4.8. I also have a Canon MP830
multifunction printer/scanner/copier/fax which I have connected through
an Airport Extreme base station (v5.7). I bought both a couple of
months ago and for the most part had been printing without difficulty.
Then one day I was unable to access the printer through the wireless
connection, and in the process of debugging tried to reinstall the
printer drivers, at which point I started running into dreaded "Error
-9672". From what I have read, this might sometimes mean that the
printer isn't network compatible. Problem is, I KNOW that it's
possible to print to this pritiner through Airport, I'd been doing it
for over a month. But now I can't seem to get around this error.

I can see the printer as a Bonjour printer through the browser of the
Printer Setup Utility. The utility auto-detects the "Canon IJ Printer"
driver. When I try to "add" I get the rainbow wheel for about a minute
and then a dialog box with the error.

I am using the latest drivers available from the Canon website.

Also, if I connect the printer directly to the MacBook via USB, it
prints fine.

AppleScript is indeed the ideal choice. You want to use PDF Services
which has been available since OS 10.2.something. Basically, you write
the AppleScript and place it in a PDF Services folder in /Library or
~/Library.

  2-Sided Semi-Automatic Printing

On my old G3/9.2.2/HP 870 Printer/HP driver 9.4.2 system I could do
partly automatic 2-sided printing. That is, once the Print command was
dispatched, the odd pages of the document would be printed. Then the
printer would wait for me to manually turn over the document, put it
back in the printe, tell it to go again and the even pages would be
printed. And, if the document had an odd humber of pages, a blank last
sheet would be kicked out.

Does anyone know of a way to do the same thing on an iMac
G5/10.4.8/Epson CX4200 Printer. I would think that this is a good
candidate for an Apple Script program but the Epson driver does not
appear to be scriptable.
