Re: How do I add a printer driver from Leopard/Mac OS X 10.5 DVDs?

Good news, everyone. It was easy as cake when I tried it last night. I
hooked it up, even through a cheap USB hub, to MacBook Pro (using
battery), turned on the printer, and it wokred. I tried all USB ports
(also testing to see if they all work [don't want a defective MacBook
Pro]. I didn't need to install, configure, etc. Wow. Also, I upgraded
Mac OS X to v10.5.5 before doing the printer hookup in case there were
updates for it.

Cuts off Left Margin - Brother MFC-9840-CDW

Author: gmark

I have a macbook on a wireless connection from a Netgear WPN824
router (with DHCP turned off -- just used as a wireless hub). My
wife's computer is, like the Netgear, connected via CAT10 to the main
router from our cable modem. My daughter is connected to the router
the same way I am -- via another netgear router, which is in turn,
connection via CAT10 to the main router.

Here's the weird part -- I have no problem at all connecting to my
daughter's machine. It shows up as just another server when I use the
GO -> CONNECT TO SERVER... menu item. My wife's never does.

I've putzed with disk permissions and such, but it always seems my
wife's machine disappears from the network. None of the machines in
question have any trouble connecting to the net, BTW.

Any ideas?

TIA!

Mark

Cuts off Left Margin - Brother MFC-9840-CDW

This otherwise great multifunction printer/scanner cuts off the left
margin of printer material when I print -- particularly with webpages
from the Safari browser.

Any ideas?

TIA!

  Brother MFC copier opinions ?

Author: Norm
Date: Sep 16, 2008 11:44

Looking to replace an Canon PC-8 copier and decided to look at some of
the multifunction devices.

Interested in any opinions about the Brother MFC-7840N or similar.

I have a HP 5MP printer that is still working well so I'm more
interested in the copy and fax capabilities and also, to a lesser
degree, the scan functions.

Thank you.

Apple's installer doesn't give you a choice. Believe it or not, there
are a whole lot of people who don't even know what model printer they
have. They just know it's an "Epson printer" and would rather not have
to think much further than that. Apple usually aims for the lowest
common denominator. ; )

  HP DeskJet F4280 Comments?

Author: Ant

Hello.

How good is HP's DeskJet F4280 for printing a lot of documents, a few
pictures, Web pages, etc. at home? How about scanning? This will be
mainly with a MacBook Pro and Windows machine (2000 SP4 and XP Pro. SP3).

I read and heard that the printer isn't that good. For example,
http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B0015ZLHRE/ref=cm_cr_dp_all_helpful?%%5Fencoding...
shows mixed reviews and comments.

Thank you in advance.

HP Officejet 6110, softwares, & Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Author: Ant
Date: Sep 12, 2008 00:20

Hello.

I am converting a Windows user to a MacBook Pro with its Mac OS X 10.5
(Leopard). He has an old HP Officejet 6110 (USB connection) that he uses
in Windows 2000 SP4 for printing, scanning, and copying. According to
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01234231&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product...
... the driver part will be no problems but what about the software
(e.g., scanning)? Does Mac OS X 10.5 comes with a scanning software for
images for this old OfficeJet since
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=219&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product...
still doesn't have the updated softwares (latest is for 10.4 on 8/2006)?

Thank you in advance.

How bad an idea is using a Windows printer on a Mac?

Author: news.rcn.com

Someone has just offered me a Canon ImageClass colour laser printer to
replace my ageing parallel-only 5MP. The trouble is that Canon hasnt
bothered making any Mac drivers for it and there are NO proper reviews of it
(and no one on comp.periphs.printers had even heard of it!). I can however
use it on my Windows setup under Fusion. But my whole office will require
major surgery to accomodate this behemoth.

I cant establish precisely how bad a colour printer this four
colour-cartridge laser jet is compared to my four colour-cartridge Deskjet
952c because apparently no one has bought one and used it and written a
review. So I was wondering precisely how bad an idea using it with Windows
is where one of the whole beauties of the Mac OS is that it prints colours
so much better than Windows.

BTW Just to make matters worse, the printer has a fax and scanner built in!
Is it likely that I will be able to find Canon drivers for the scanner
running under Leopard? (Not particularly concerned with the fax as I have
already installed and used WinFaxPro under Fusion).

Should I just install it in a far corner of my office and connect it to a
dedicated windows computer and try to figure out how to print through the
network?

lpoptions applying to all print jobs

Author: John
Date: Sep 10, 2008 09:07

I now have scripts that will pause/resume print queues,
hold and no-hold individual jobs, and do most of what
I want to control.

But, now I want to have ALL print jobs sent to a
particular queue to have:

lpoptions -o job-hold-until=hold

I have a script that toggles this from no-hold to
hold, and print jobs printed with lpr and lp indeed
behave as expected.

But, when the printer queue has hold set, and a job
is printed from FireFox or TextEdit, etc. the option
is not respected and is printed immediately.

Is there a way to make new print jobs to a particular
printer ALWAYS get the hold option no matter what
application prints it?

[Mac OS X Leopard]

Thanks, John
