How-to Upgrade your Macbook Pro internal hard disk and retain your Boot Camp partition

Author: Ric
Date: Aug 8, 2008 06:15

Right, I've just upgraded the internal hard disk on my 17" Macbook
Pro, and kept my Boot Camp Windows XP install working.
I thought it worth posting a quick how-to on this, as it's not
entirely trivial - normal cloning software like CCC and SuperDuper
won't help you with your BootCamp partition.

First off, the drive replacement. On the Macbook it's easy. On the
Pro, less so: it requires dismantling the top casing of your laptop.
This isn't too bad if you're handy with a screwdriver, but you could
royally screw up your machine whilst simultaneously voiding your
warranty if you're less experienced. Your call.
I found a four-pack of Carlsberg at 1 a.m. to be my ideal time, but
again, YMMV.

First off, get yourself a firewire or USB drive caddy. Intel Macs can
use USB, PPC ones not as we're going to boot off it later.
Stick in your new big drive, and initialise using Disk Utility as Mac
OS Journalled. Download and run SuperDuper from Shirtpocket to clone
old drive to new one.
When done, restart your Mac, hold down ALT and choose the new drive as
a boot disk and check it works. OK? Right, time to swap drives.

Hold down the Option key. That will bring up a list of all disks
currently available to start up from.

Making sure the disk is attached to your Mac, start up the computer
while holding down the "option" key. A list of potential startup disks
should appear.

Warning, you cannot start an Intel Mac with a PPC startup disk, or
vice versa. Also, the OS has to be able to support the computer you
are using (e.g. don't use a Leopard disk to start up a G3).

Which hardware to choose for data-exchange between OSX/Windows/Linux

Author: li_123_lo

Hello!

Which hardware should be best for an external harddisk which has to be
useable on all mentioned OS's? Which interface (USB or firewire)? NTFS,
HFS+, FAT32 or whatever?

Thanks!

  Time Machine Wears Out Disks?

Author: gmark99

I really love Time Machine, but of the two machines I've been running
it on, both have trashed the respective backup HDs. Am I very
unlucky, or does Time Machine have more critical requirements on an HD
than most apps? Of course, it runs every 15 minutes or hour, but I've
seen similar behavior on both Leopard machines -- the drive begins to
fail to mount and requires an init or power cycle of some kind to be
recognized, and eventually won't mount at all. Disk Warrior or Drive
Utility or TechTool Pro is needed to repair it.

I had a 500 G Maxtor and a 320 G ADS (don't know the brand of HD
inside).

On the Maxtor, at least, I did use it for storing other files as well,
and was told by an Alsoft tech that that was a bad idea, and that TM
HDs should be dedicated. Considering the fact that TM is accessed far
more frequently than those other files, I'm not sure why those files
should make a difference, and certainly not cause two failures in such
a short time.

Any comments or suggestions?

  iMac Hard Disk

I can no longer login to my iMac. Is there anyway I can erase the
drive? Do I have to take it out of the case and discard it?

Can the drive once out, be used in any manner.

How about the 17-inch screen? Can it be used?
