Weird once only internet connection

I'm trying to help out a friend who has two Macs on a network connected via
ADSL to the internet. I should warn you in advance that I'm not a Mac
user!).

They've got a really weird problem on one of their machines (a G5 running
Tiger 10.4.11). It refuses to display certain web pages, and refuses to
download their emails.

They have a domain hosted by me2uweb.com, and use the SMTP and POP servers
on their domain for their emails. For some reason, their Mail program
simply won't connect to their me2uweb email servers. Interestingly, they
also have an email account with BT Internet, and it will get and send emails
on that account just fine.

I obviously thought there was something wrong with the account settings in
Mail, but they are perfectly correct.

I then discovered that Safari won't display any web pages that are hosted by
me2uweb! However, Safari will happily display pages anywhere else on the
Web.

Thanks for these suggestions. I'll drive over to their place this weekend
and try those four steps.

Incidentally, the reason for the slightly odd "once only" wording of the
title is that they claim that if they reboot the suspect Mac, they can
download their emails once, but not subsequently until they reboot.

This suggests something funny with Mail, but (and I've seen this with my own
eyes) Safari is blocked as well.

I'm not convinced they are reporting this bit correctly, although I can
definitely confirm that the symptoms described in my original email are as
described.

Finally, how do I get to the firewall in the Mac?

Thanks again,

That's an interesting new lead. I've thought all along it's something to do
with name resolution, but I have no idea how that is handled in Macs.

I'll go over to their place tomorrow and see what it looks like.

Many thanks,

Thanks for that. I've done just what you say, and can confirm that both
Macs have identical settings in that area.

No, they were reporting it wrongly, as I suspect. They were receiving
emails from a completely different email account, which works fine, and was
fooling them.

So, forget about the "works once after a reboot" part of it.

Sorry to confuse you!

Colleagues,

Thank you all for your help with this problem. I tried all your
suggestions, including checking the 'hosts' file and creating a completely
new Location.

Nothing has worked. It is just so completely weird.

Anyway, the owner is going to call out a proper Apple technician to sort it
out. If the owner is able to follow what the technician does I'll report
back, just for the record in case somebody else suffers this problem.

Meanwhile, thank you again for trying to help. Really appreciate it.
