No expert here. But I had/have a similar problem with my cable
modem/router.
I hope suggestion below works for you.
I have only two software programs that do work with my setup:
IPNetMonitor and WhatRoute. Both of these allow me to toggle a setting
on the TraceRoute from default (I assume UDP traceroute) to ICMP Trace.
WhatRoute has setting to turn off UDP Trace which then goes to ICMP
trace. Once this is done, the TraceRoute proceeds correctly and I get
all traceroute responses.
I have no idea what specifically is going on here. All I know is that
UDP Trace does not work, and yields the same result as your problem, no
echo response. I have found no other workaround other than these two
particular programs.
You might try these two Mac OSX programs as they work for me. Others
which have traceroute features do not work (NetBarrier, VisualRoute
etc). These seem to set for UPD traceroute.
You could also try bypassing your router (connect directly your DSL
modem and computer ---not through a router) and see if that makes a
difference.
My hardware OSX setup:
RoadRunner ISP
cable modem (Old 3COM sharkfin)
MacSense MIH 130A Xrouter Pro
currently running
10.4.8 (but same results with earlier 10.x versions)
several G4s 450MHZ, 933MHz, and 1.25GHz iMac.
G'Day and good luck.
