The Internet, ATT and the 3G iPhone

Since I've spoken highly of ATT services in the past when others have
posted such questions, I felt obligated to share the following. Note,
however, that I'm doubtful about the veracity of the information I
received.

I had cause to talk with ATT the other day about our services plan so I
also asked about the new 3G iPhone and how the plan would work.

The first shocker was that the ATT customer service person immediately
told me that I don't really want an iPhone. She has a friend, you see,
who says that his is very clumsy and inconvenient. No, she has never
really used an iPhone herself, said she, but she just knows I need to
choose another kind of phone to replace my aged Sony Ericsson. I wonder
how ATT corporate and Apple would view this little sales scenario. Hmm.

The one thing I've learned about phone companies is if you don't like
what you're hearing from one of their people, try again. That is, call
back, talk to another person, and see how you like their answers. Keep
going until you get someone who is a) helpful and b) knows what they're
talking about. You'll probably wind up saving a little money, too.

I think that you were talking to someone who didn't know WTF she was
talking about. Although I notice that the plan costs appear to have
been removed from Apple's and AT&T's web sites, or at least are hard to
find.

Right here she's solidly established her credentials as a clueless
person who's nevertheless happy to pretend to know what she's talking
about. That should answer any other questions you might have about her
statements.

Here (if it's the same as before), she's ten percent correct.
When you get within range of an open WiFi AP, the first iPhone
was advertised as switching from the cell system to that
automatically. So, if you really stretch the interpretation,
you're not connecting to the internet with the AT&T service
at that location. :-)

The same thing is happening with sales staff everywhere. I suppose it's
a result of all the cost cutting that the makeover geniuses have done
over the last 20 years.

If you want to know anything now, you need to find it out for yourself.
Most of the salespeople don't really understand what the internet is or
the technicalities of cell networks, any more than someone working in
your local burger bar (probably much less). All they have is a sheet
they have to follow and a target for the month.
