Ah! For me that is the key remark -- a list of possible subscriptions
has to be found.

It _can_ be done at any time, but my best route so far is surprisingly
long:

a) Select
Tools > Adblock Plus...
giving a window of Adblock Preferences

b) Ignore the window.
From the drop down menus at the top of the screen select
Filters > Add filter subscriptions
giving a window inviting you to enter a subscription title

c) Ignore the request to type in the details.
Click on the nearby coloured link
"View all subscriptions"
which opens, but does not bring to the front,
a page headed
"Known Adblock Plus subscriptions"
_the_ way into what ordinary users need to have.

d) Bring the page to the front, and you see
a table of all possible subscriptions on offer
from the community of people who support Adblock Plus.
The first two entries offer EasyList and EasyElement
each with a link to click to install them.

(If you have CoolIris and/or Interclue installed, you can view what will
be added without actually clicking on the links. You can also explore
the many informative links down the right hand side of the page)

The two "Easy"s are indeed remarkably long lists.

Even after uninstalling,
I didn't get what I think of as a dialogue box.

[OS 10.4.11 on Intel MacMin with Firefox 3.0.1 and
with add-ons Clipmark, Cooliris, DownloadStatus bar,
Interclue, PDF Download, and (UK) Met office weather gadget]

Well. It's all properly installed now. Thank you very much for the
pointers.
