Then you must have inadvertantly dismissed the dialog box that appears
immediately after restarting Firefox for the first time after it's
installed, where it asks you what subscriptions you want.

You are supposed to pick the EasyList USA subscription (and any others
you want) at that point. AdBlock Plus will then automatically populate
your filters list with ones from the chosen subscription(s) that are
maintained automatically for you as time goes on. Once your filters list
is populated with filters this way, ads are automatically blocked, and
you rarely need to add your own.

So try this:

1. Uninstall AdBlock Plus.
2. Restart Firefox.
3. Install AdBlock Plus again.
4. This time when you restart Firefox, pay special attention to the
dialog box that appears.
5. Choose a subscription (Easylist USA, for instance).

Now your filters list should reflect the fact that you are subscribed,
and, more importantly, AdBlock Plus will be able to block ads according
to those filters.
