time capsule--gigabit ethernet to HD transfer speed

Author: TheKeith
Date: Mar 30, 2008 17:55

quick question about using gigabit ethernet to transfer files to the
time capsule's built in HD. From what I could gather, this new hd
utilizes a serial ata interface, having a 3Gb/s transfer rate; and of
course gigabit ethernet is 1Gb/s. Am I not wrong then in assuming that
I should be able to transfer files to that internal drive at a
theoretical speed of 1Gb/s or at least not much slower (roughly double
the speed of usb 2.0)? If not, why not? Thanks.

initiate file transfer between two devices from third machine

Author: TheKeith

I'm wondering if someone could help me; I'm about two transfer about
400GB of data from a USB external HD to my time capsule. I figure the
easiest way to do this would be to just plug the usb drive directly
into the usb port on the time capsule and initiate the transfer from a
third machin
--which happens to be connected via wifi. I'm wondering
whether or not the files would first go through the initiating machine
(wifi macbook) instead of directly from HD to time capsule. If so, is
there any other way I can get the files to take a direct route?
Obviously, wifi is considerably slower than usb 2.0's 480mbps. Any
help would be appreciated--thanks.

Airport Express no longer works after update

Author: Uncle Dave
Date: Mar 29, 2008 03:31

Hi, I'd be grateful if somebody could tell me how to roll back from an
update that installed yesterday and since which I have been unable to
connect to my network using AE. I've always had problems with it
losing the network intermittently, but since the update it tries to
connect appears to for a few seconds and then loses it.

Curiously, I can connect to the net via a USB stick from a Parallels
VM but I'd rather be able to do it with the Mac (Powerbook Pro).

My other network devices - phone, PC, printer - never have these
problems. Any help gratefully received.

Yesterday my daughter called in a panic that her iMac had been taken
over. She states that her cursor was moving contrary to her inputs.
Shen was browsing "Facebook" at the time. I VNCed in to her machine and
viewed the cosole logs. Here is a excerpt.

speedtest.net is probably the most fun, because it
offers servers all over the world.

http://www.wugnet.com/myspeed/speedtest.asp
("WUG" in "Windows Users Group" :-)

http://www.acanac.ca/speedtest/ is what I use, but
acanac would only have servers in eastern Canada.

I get about the same results no matter which service
I use, and, for speedtest.net, no matter which server
I use - I can download from the Antipodes as quickly
as from the neighbourhood.

As it happens, the speeds I get are pathetic.
