I'm using a firewire connected Verbatim hard disc for Time Capsule
backup but every time it tries to back up it says failed. Is there
something different that needs to be done with Firewire drives? Options
settings seem to make no difference.

What is "Time Capsule"? Do you mean "Time Machine" or is there
something else?
I am using Time Machine with a firewire drive, no problems that I know
of.

Time Machine sorry. Time Capsule is the Mac wireless drive. I really
don't see the need to erase the drive as it was brand new when installed
as a Time Machine drive. Any other ideas why this should fail to backup?

usually new drives are formatted as fat32, so they'll work with just
about any computer, out of the box. time machine will not work with
fat32 formatted drives. if that's the case, you *will* need to
reformat it as mac os extended (hfs+).

I checked and it is formatted as mac extended.

Let's see now. The backup isn't working, you want it to work, erasing
and starting over is often the solution in cases like this...

The Mac filesystem still has some bugs in it and Time Machine seems to
hit them on older backups. Use Disk Utility to check for corruption.

What makes you think that?

Actually, you are correct about the bugs. I erased the disk then set up
time machine again and then ran disk utility. It found several flags
that were incorrect and some file name errors. When those were corrected
back ups are now in place with Time Machine. But that says there are
errors in copying by Time Machine as no such errors were present on the
original I-Mac.
