Then why would the horizontal split function exist? One could line up
windows on top of each other, no?

Yes, but you're missing the point. You're looking for a split function
that doesn't exist in the programs you have, so we're asking why not use
two windows IN THOSE PROGRAMS, instead of switching to a new programs
entirely just for that. Then again, I tend to be frugal to the
maximum...
