  Edwin & Slade: Answer this

Author: Tim Murray
Date: May 24, 2008 15:40

Pursuant to your myth post.

Say that Apple's computers were built by the same folks who build the tape
recorders for Mission Impossible. You had no way of knowing what was inside,
because as soon as you cracked open the case, it consumed its processor and
motherboard in a white-hot magnesium flash.

In other words, all you know about it is how it works from the user-interface
level.

So answer this: Is a Mac just a Wintel box?

  The Number One Macintosh Myth...

Author: Edwin
Date: May 24, 2008 14:21

... is that the Macintosh still exists!

All Apple has sold since Summer of 2006 is a Wintel PC running BSD
Unix. Not even a pretense of the original Mac OS UI remains.

Witness that what's currently called a "Mac" runs Windows out of the
box. It's a Wintel PC.

Witess that Psystar sells standard PCs running unmodified Mac OS X.
Mac OS X is BSD Unix for PC with Apple's proprietary UI and AIs
slapped on top.

Not the end of Zune, of course - especially when a company as big as MS
is behind it - but perhaps an example where Redmond's "me too" strategy
has faltered.

Consider that Apple entered a relatively small MP3 player market in 2001
with superior hardware, software and IIRC the only Firewire interface
(for much faster transfers than USB 1.1). Like the Mac, it was a closed
environment, first with iTunes (you ripped your own CDs) and then the
iTunes store (DRM content bought from Apple). But Apple did offer MP3
and AAC support - two open audio file formats - for ripped content.

Despite the original doubters, many who criticized the iPod's high price
tag, the iPod took off, and spawned the Mini, the Shuffle, the Nano and
the Touch, and finally the iPhone. Apple now owns the portable music
player market, the online media purchasing market, and is challenging
RIM for the smartphone market.

Common Myths for the Macintosh

Friday, May 16, 2008

There are lots of reasons that people don't want to switch from Windows
to Macintosh. I assume the most common reason is simply because Windows
works for the people that are using it. The old adage "If it ain't broke
don't fix it" tends to apply here. These people are not upgrading to
Vista either, they're staying with Windows XP or even Windows 98 and are
just fine.

There are however an increasing number of people that are moving to Macs
now - many of them people like me that
