Interesting blog entry by Ivan Krstic on the OLPC (which he was a major
contributor to) and Windows:

<http://radian.org/notebook/sic-transit-gloria-laptopi>

In the middle, there is an interesting digression:
> One of the favorite arguments of the free software and open source

> proprietary alternatives is the user's supposed ability to take

Interesting quotes --

“We have achieved the promises of Moore’s Law,”

“Much more pervasive now is the problem with software.”

“Software is getting bigger and more complex,"

"The Windows Vista operating system is so much bigger than its
predecessors, that it is not any faster even though processing speeds
have increased.”

DOD wants apps up to speed

Despite hardware advances, complex code and heavy traffic put a drag
on systems Bloated operating systems and applications are preventing
military organizations from getting sufficient speed from their
information technology systems, according to several speakers at a
recent Navy IT Day in Washington.

“We have achieved the promises of Moore’s Law,” the decades-old axiom
that processing power would roughly double every 18 to 24 months, said
Chris Miller, the Navy’s domain lead for command, control,
communications, computers and intelligence (C4I).

OT:Does this kind of hypocrisy bother you?

As a parent about to send his oldest child to college this irks me:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/05/14/beck.collegeendowment/index.html

--begin quote--
"You'd be taxing success here," Kevin Casey, Harvard's associate vice
president for government, community and public affairs complained in a
quote that will soon be framed and hung in my office. "Over time, this
would put us at a real competitive disadvantage, which would drastically
hurt the Commonwealth."

No Kevin, you're looking at it the wrong way. These politicians aren't
trying to hurt you, they're just trying to level the playing field.
Greater Shrewsbury Liberal Arts Community Technical College for Women
down the road is struggling and here you are making billions. If they
could just redistribute some of your profits to GSLACTCFW then everybody
would be happy.

Does anyone else find it ironic that universities overflowing with
liberal professors (a 2005 study revealed that 72 percent of professors
view themselves that way) embrace conservative values only when it suits
them?
