PC Issues for new cancer patient

Author: Chuck Tinkey
Date: Jul 31, 2008 08:55

Long story which I'll try to keep to a minimum. Just diagnosed with terminal
brain and lung cancer. Have been a computer profression all my near 60
years. Technical support, IT manager and Field Engineer for most of past 7
years. Suddenly cognitive dissonance is an issue. I'm trying to do
somethings I just don't remember how to do (I used to, I think). If anyone
could refer me to cheap (read free) support I'll resond with all my
specifics and you can then make a descision whether to get involved.
Absolutely no bad feelings or recriminations will eminate from here.

Thank you for your consideration.

  IBM PS 2 P70 Request

Author: stu3x

I have IBM PS 2 P70 which boots to 163 error. I have replaced battery
with CR-P2 Panasonic. I checked and battery read 6V. With ref disk
rfp70a in hand I booted. Disk made noise, light lit---nothing. It
appears as if the disk drive either can't read or won't read or I
don't have any idea. If I hit F1, the machine would boot of C:\ just
fine. Respectfully request to know what you all might recommend for
my next procedure to get this P70 fully functional.

The screen at boot shows 163
----> paper---->IBM

Anyone?

Having difficulty with the above combination.....and it was a working
combination at one time.

Clean installation of MSDOS6.1 and then WFW. Network installation
goes smoothly until I reboot.

System boots MSDOS6.1 through netstart and halts at a DOS prompt. I
type "win" and the instant I get the large windows logo, everything
halts....and freezes.

This happens only if I have the proper driver installed for the NIC.
If I install the driver for a 3com Etherlink MCA, the system will boot
into Windows with the error message that something is wrong with my
NIC and it may need some tweaking.

If I have the proper driver installed for the 3com Etherlink III
(3C529) and the system is halting, should I replace the card first
before I go muddling around?

Going wheels up in a few. Things to do, places
to go and all that.

I do wish someone had picked up those Aironet /
ARLAN token ring wireless bridges (631-2400) that
I posted for true TR wireless fun...

  Thinkpad 701c hard drive upgrade

Author: Tim Knight/CT

Back again with questions immaterial to PS/2.......however I am again
CT the Needy........

I want to install a larger hard drive (larger than 720mb) and 12.7mm
thick. There are zillions of 2 1/2 drives out there that I can make
work.....but I want them to be fitted properly. Here is my problem:

Most of the larger hard drives (especially IBM Travelstar) have the
drive mounting screw holes on the sides out near the end of the drive,
and they don't line up with the holes in the 701c drive caddy. The
standard drives for the 701c have the mounting holes a lot further in
from the edge of the drive.

Does anyone know of a series of 2 1/2 hard drives that are 12.7mm
thick and have the mount holes spaced closer than the Travelstars do?

The flowers decided to take care of things their way. All the rain this
year certainly helped.
