CPU overheating (ASUS A7A266, AMD Athlon)... need new PSU?

Author: nespresso
Date: Sep 3, 2008 13:25

i have an Asus A7A266 Socket A MB (ALiMaGiK 1 chipset, 1.25 GB DDR RAM) with
an AMD Athlon 1.4 GHz chip, running Windows XP. according to the motherboard
monitor utility, even when XP is idle the CPU temperature is running between
60 and 70 degrees C. this seems too hot, especially as the chip's max is
supposed to be 90 degrees. recently on a couple of occasions while running
an emulator the chip has overheated and the MB has sounded the overheating
warning. i replaced the CPU heatsink and fan but it didnt improve the idle
temperature. i've noticed that sometimes (intermittently) the PSU fan doesnt
start spinning at all when powering on the PC.

1) does it sound like the PSU is the cause of the problem in this case? or
is there something else i should be checking first?

2) what do i need to look for when searching for a compatible PSU? i know
there are different wattages, voltages etc available but how do i find one
that will work with my system?

any help appreciated. thanks!

  Asus A7V400-MX motherboard memory problem

Author: Bitty
Date: Aug 28, 2008 08:00

Hello,

Since a few days I have a second-hand motherboard (Asus A7V400-MX) with
a default memory dimm of 256MB (DDR PC2700 256MB). Because I want to run
SuSE Linux 10.3 on it to manage my synthesizers, I had to extend the
memory with a dimm of at least 1 GB. My vendor gave me Kingston
KVR400X64C3A, which I had installed at once. After booting up, the
computer signal a long beep, what means that the memory was not
installed or detected. Is it possible that the memory does not suite the
main board? The manual of the A7V400-MX mentioned the memory module as
applyable, so what could be possibly went wrong?

Kind regards,

Johan.

IBM PC XT/AT and memory holes

Author: Vimal
Date: Aug 26, 2008 12:32

I tried to find a copy of the original specifications document for the
IBM PC XT/AT, but I wasn't able to. I wanted to know what was the
memory map of the original IBM PC XT.

I remember reading that the regions from 0xA000:0 till 0xFFFF:7FFF
were reserved for something other than memory mapped IO.

Did the concept of memory mapped IO exist in the PC XT at all?

Thanks,

Single Board Computer Case With Hotswap Drives

Author: Will
Date: Jul 2, 2008 19:00

Can someone recommend a rackmount single-board-computer case that takes
hotswap hard drives? We are stuck using Altigen for a phone mail system,
and it unfortunately uses PCI cards for its extensions and trunks. The
case we currently have has terrible hard drive access, and I need to be able
to quickly swap out hard drives when one fails.

I am hesitant to try to use modern Dell or HP server systems since those
have slots for PCI-X cards and I'm leery that antique PCI cards would work
well in such a system. (I welcome opinions about PCI compatibility in
modern servers.)

  On-board video performace ?

Author: Al Dykes
Date: Jun 21, 2008 11:06

I'm familiar with cheap video cards that used system memory and took a
preformance hit as a trade-off.

When I look at a current mobo with on-board video, this one for
instance, does the video chip have it's own memory or do I have to
assume shared memory design?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813121342

I'm not looking for 3D or gamer performance, but if I buy a fast CPU
and want to make it work hard, I don't want to be slowed down by the
memory subsystem.
