Hi Guys,

I have a workgroup here with the following setup:

About 5 computers
On a Workgroup
Each user has a PC, and one logon per machine, which is the first name
of the person that uses that machine, ie Tom. There is no password
reqd when logging on.
The machines are running XP

The problems started when one of the of the computers needed to be
formatted. This was done, and the computer was given the same computer
name and put on the same workgroup.

Now the formatted computer, lets call it PC1 can see all the shares on
the rest of the network, but nobody can see the shares on PC1 (I did
recreate them - its mainly just the My Doc folder)

So I manually added the shares on the other PC's from within My
Network Places > Add Network Place. That worked.

Now the only problem really seems to be that if I go to another PC,
say PC2, and try to browse the workgroup (via View Workgroup
Computers) I can see PC1, but when I click on it I get something to
the effect of "Cannot view \\PC1 .....access denied"

Now I checked that I have go File and Printer Sharing Installed, and
the other thing the MS KB article said to do was to make sure netbios
over TCP/IP was enabled and it is.

I am wondering if its something to do with Local Security Policy or
Shared Folder Setup in computer management???

So to summarise, I can PING, and I can connect to SMB shares, but cant
browse the formatted PC, PC1, in the list of computers in WORKGROUP.

Please help,

Cheers

-Al

I have an SMC7004BR 4-Port Switch/NAT Router that has a built-in print
server (with a parallel-port connector).

For many years, I have used the SMC7004BR to connect to the Internet (via
cable modem) as well as share files between several computers. It has
worked fine.

Recently, I decided to try using the built-in parallel-port print server.
(All the computers use XP Pro and are current with all updates.)

After connecting the printer to the SMC7004BR's parellel port, I turned on
the router as I observed the SMC7004BR's web page (http://192.168.123.254/).
The Printer Status went from "Not Ready" to "Ready". Thus the SMC7004BR
recognized that a printer was connected.

Next, using the Add Printer Wizard, I set up the software on a computer
that previously had the printer connected to it's parallel port -- and was
normally used this way. (Thus the printer and driver were functional).

Even though I was able to use the Add Printer Wizard to setup the printer to
it's specified IP address of 192.168.123.254 (which is also the SMC7004BR's
gateway address), I could not print. When I tried to print, the printer icon
appeared in the
notification area in the lower right corner. Right clicking on this icon,
brought up the dialog box for the printer stating that it was printing --
but I got nothing printed out -- even after waiting for several minutes. (It
seemed that the "printing" just "stalled"). I verified that the IP
connection existed by seeing the connection using the TCP -View program.

THUS MY PROBLEM: WHY CAN'T I PRINT?

William R. Cousert wrote:
> Would it be possible to create a city-wide network with a series of linked
> 802.11n routers?

Not really, that's not how WiFi works. The question would be how would
you link those series of routers to each other? And the answer would be
of course, through the Internet. That basically defeats the purpose of
creating an alternative to the Internet.

However, for a few thousand bucks, Intel might be willing to sell you
its newest brainchild, WiMAX. That's basically a wide-area network based
on similar technology to WiFi, but it competes against the cellular
phone network. It's got very little chance of success when put up
against the cell network, but it might work out in a remote 3rd world
village somewhere. But even remote 3rd world villages have cell phone
service these days.

Yousuf Khan
