Why did they release a Gold version of GalCivII and then release a new
expansion pack for it afterwards? Gold means final and containing all
expansion packs. The Gold version they are selling is not that as it lacks
'Twilight of the Arnor' expansion pack . Guess I will have to wait for the
Platinum version containing all expansion packs now.

I have to agree, based on what has been the traditional meaning of a "Gold"
version in the past. I bought the Gold pack at a Best Buy last year, and
only
a few months later found out that the second expansion (which is now out)
was already in development. I wasn't happy about it either. But I don't care
much now as I don't even play the game anymore. Kind of a waste of money
in the first place (for my, in my opinion).

Thanks, but $60.00 is a bit steep. I'll buy it when it is $49.99 or
lower. Might already be that price at my local Futuershop or Walmart
if they have released it to retail already. Still, my point still
stands. Don't release a version and call it Gold when it is not Gold.

I have GalCiv but not GalCivII so a final version with all expansions
is yet to be added to my game library. Some games, like the Total War
series, it is always better to wait until all expansions are out and
then buy it as it is a better deal than buying the base game and then
the expansions separately. Good thing I didn't buy GCII when the Gold
version was released because obviously it was not Gold at all.

"Gold" as the final version? Surely you jest. Gold is only the first
bundle. The next one is Platinum, and the one after that is Diamond.
Railroad Tycoon II and Neverwinter Nights have already set that
standard.
What I find more surprising with GalCivII is that Stardock just
released a Game of the Year edition that does not contain either of
the follow-on expansions. Why do that after you've already released a
Gold version bundle, and just before releasing a second expansion?

Is that now true with GalCivII? I seem to remember with the first one that
the AI races automatically knew where all the >16 rank stars where, and
started with diplomatic contact with each other.

Yea, that's true as I have both those games. RRT2 PLatinum and NWN Diamond.
But that is just two games. Gold is normally meant to be only for final
version. They just invented Platinum and Diamond so they could milk the
games for a few more bucks after Gold version. I guess that is the case
with GalCivII when they saw how well it was selling. They should try to
plan ahead though and stick to the naming conventions so as to not confuse
people.

I'm strictly playing with a "no bonus" AI, and the computer players do seem
to have the need to explore and find your empire before dealing with it. I
still have to try the highest AI levels, but I-m not really interested in a
computer player that is advantaged by "cheats": I like more to tke advantage
of my quad-core CPU and give to "normal" to "intelligent" AIs more thinking
power.
