MDFS (Midwich Disc Filing System) ROM neaded

Author: Chris Evans
Date: Aug 29, 2008 08:58

I have a 'massive' 5MB Hard drive for a BBC B but I've lost the MDFS ROM for
it, any one got one or a ROM image?

MDFS (Midwich Disc Filing System) is not to be confused with the later MDFS
networking system.

MDFS used to partition the hard drive into many 200K 31 file drives

n.b. When I say 'massive' I'm not exagerating as I'm talking of its physical
size, not its 5MB capacity!

FFmpeg release with additional support for Windows formats

Author: Christopher Martin
Date: Aug 28, 2008 23:11

I have uploaded a new build of FFmpeg with additional support for some
common Windows formats. The additions also mean a larger download (1 MB)
and more RAM required (almost 3 MB to start). Still requires a StrongARM
or newer CPU.

Also included in the download are a couple of TaskObey scripts that can
be used as convenient launchers. They are designed to be kept in the
same folder as the ffmpeg program, but feel free to edit them as you
like to suit your own preferences.

<http://www.users.on.net/~belles/software/ffmpeg.zip>

To help you decide if you want to bother with this download, the
following is the output from *ffmpeg -formats

FFmpeg version 0.4.9-pre2, Copyright (c) 2000-2007 Fabrice Bellard, et al.
configuration:
libavutil version: 49.5.0
libavcodec version: 51.46.0
libavformat version: 51.15.0

Looking for the authors of Sprich and Dis le

Author: Paul F. Johnson

Hi,

Does anyone know who wrote Sprich and Dis Le and if they are still around? I'm trying to get hold of the source for both of these apps (with a view to porting to .NET), but so far attempts aren't showing up with much...

  AVG versus Messenger on VRPC

Author: Paul Beverley
Date: Aug 27, 2008 12:28

Hi All

I was just checking the virus vault on my Windows AVG virus software
and I found that, in the vault, were three files in Messenger's
!NewsDir directory in the Spool folder.

This had me a little worried, so I checked for the files mentioned and,
sure enough, they weren't inside !NewsDir.MsgServe.Spool.0.whatever
anymore.

I checked the 'Group' files in the two directories from which the
three files had been removed, and they were Messenger's 'Wastebasket'
and 'Spam' folders.

What if AVG decides (erroneously, of course) that one of the more
important files inside !NewsDir is a virus?!?!

One thing I have noticed is that the files inside Spool are not
compressed, i.e. they are perfectly readable if you shift-double-click
them into a text editor.

Now, I seem to remember that there's an option in MessPro (I'm using
v. 4.24) to choose to store compressed or non-compressed, but I can't
find where it's set (assuming I didn't imagine it). Might it be a way
of avoiding the AVG problem?

  No sidebar to FireFox window

Author: David R Lane
Date: Aug 23, 2008 12:05

Hi all FireFoxers,

I recently re-installed version 2.0.0.14 of Peter Naulls' port of
FireFox. But I can't get a sidebar for bookmarks/history. If I
click on View --> Sidebar --> Bookmarks or View --> Sidebar --> History
FF crashes with a report in file stderr. The same thing happens if
I click on History --> Show in Sidebar.

I use to have a sidebar with this version before I re-installed,
but I can't see how to create one now.

Should I replace the stderr file with an empty text file? One report
in stderr started "Illegal instruction ....." and another had
"Xlib: extension "SHAPE" missing on display "(null)"." repeated 4
times each on a separate line.

  Instead of an explicit path

Author: Dave Symes
Date: Aug 23, 2008 03:54

Folks, there's a way to depict the hardisk part of a file path that's not
explicit in name, but I'm damned if I can remember how it goes.

Could someone please enlighten...?

Eg: "Filer_OpenDir ADFS::HardDisc4.$.!Application" Would be?

Cheers

  Setting up SpamStamp

Author: John Greenwood
Date: Aug 21, 2008 08:55

I am trying to install SpamStamp with NetFetch and Pluto on my SA RPC.

I think I have followed all the instructions, ie:

- !Nfilter is in the directory !Pluto
- The line: Filer_Run !NFilter has been added to !Pluto.!Run
- !Pluto.!NFilter.filter has the line: !Pluto.!RunSpamStamp -process
- in NetFetch the Mail/News reader is set to !Pluto
- and Mail trans app is set to !POPstar
- !SpamStamp has been added to the look at list in !Boot

but when I select Read mail on NetFetch I get an error message:

File '.!Nfilter' not found

and the Pluto window opens as before and select on the Debatch button
brings up the new emails.

What is supposed to happen when it is correctly set up?

Cheers
John

  Multi-server-problem with NewsHound v1.50-32

Author: Alex' A. Interrants
Date: Aug 21, 2008 03:22

-> NewsHound v1.50-32 is configured to more as one newsserver. I use it
in add to MessengerPro 4.24.

Problems:
=========

1) I must manually replace the files ActiveDesc + ActiveList whenever I
change the newsserver.

2) Fetching list from a new newsserver writes the old lists over.

3) A new post is sent to the next newsserver to which I post or from
which I fetch. If the required newsgroup isn't exist on it, the news
will be rejected.

4) When I add a newsgroup, the newsgroup is added to the newsgroup
file of EACH newsserver.

Sure, I can do everything manually to avoid problems but it is still a
bit of pain. Is there another solution for this?
