Is there a way to get the DIRECTORY command to spit out the real file
names without special characters prefixed with the dreaded ˆ ?
DUMP/RECORD shows that the filename is stored properly in the .DIR file,
so there is something in the DIRECTORY command that transforms a neat
files name into an ugly hard to read one.

HP TCP/IP Services for OpenVMS Alpha Version V5.5 - ECO 2
on a DEC 3000 Model 400 "PersonalAlpha" running OpenVMS V8.2
(patch level should be "semi-current" at least)
ODS-5 volume, SYS$SYSDEVICE:[TCPIP$TFTP_ROOT] default directory
c2940-i6q4l2-mz^.121-22^.EA8a.bin;2 (2940 "Catalyst" 100baseTX switch)
c1700-y-mz122-4t3.bin;1 (1720 "Modular Access Router")
Backing up Cisco boot images via TFTP ("copy flash: tftp:") to a VMS
host system is working flawlessly as long as the file name does not
contain more than just a single dot -- it doesn't otherwise. As far as
I've seen recently boot ("flash:") images of *routers* have exactly
*one* dot within the file name -- while boot images of *switches* do
have *more* than a single dot in the file name. (Can't comment on
"enterprise class" devices though ...)
FTP isn't supported from the console environment ("ROMmon" on routers),
so I'm restricted to TFTP. Any ideas? (Other than renaming the "remote
file" to a "simple" name of course ...)
Usually version numbers and available ("licensed") features are encoded
in different parts of the file names -- so "renaming" can't be
considered "reasonable".

Maybe these exist, maybe they don't. My Googling talents could not find
them.
I'm looking for PDFs of (VAX) OpenVMS Calling Standard and OpenVMS
Programming Concepts (volumes 1 and 2).

If I have a cluster w/2 AS systems and a quorum disk (each with one vote,
quorum=2),
Can I boot a vax into this cluster (with zero votes) if it has no direct
access to the quorum disk?
If yes, would it need the quorum disk sysgen parameters set and that disk
mspc-served from
one or both of the AS systems?

I just started reading the autobiography of Tom Perkins titled "Valley
Boy". In case anyone else is interested, the first twenty pages
discuss in detail what really happened between the HP board and Carly
Fiorina, Pattie Dunn, Jay Keyworth.
p.s. I got the impression that Carly didn't think the board of
directors could tell her what to do. It sounds to me that HP could
have ended up being another company with a megalomaniacal CEO and an
impotent board (Enron? Hollinger International? Nortel?). HP really
dodged a bullet by bringing in Mark Hurd.

Can you use the old style (like what's still used on a VAX) DECwindows
environment on an Itanic running VMS V8.3?
