[9fans] WIP session at IWP9

I saw that the program draft has been posted
(http://plan9.bell-labs.com/iwp9/programme.pdf) - neat! Looks like an
interesting lineup. Can someone talk briefly about what the
Work-in-Progress session at the end is about? That is, is this content
provided by the organizers, or is it more free-form time for
attendees?

Also, while it might be a bit late to fix this for this year, in the
future it'd be nice if there was some kind of automated response
system if humans won't be expected to respond to mail. Confirming
registration and paper submissions in particular would be very nice.

Getting excited for next week.
Anthony

The initial idea was for folks attending to talk about what they were
working on without having to prepare a formal
paper/30-minute-presentation. I'm not sure what the final format is,
but one suggestion...

presumably intended as a joke, but if whoever organizes next year's
IWP9 would like help on that front, i'm happy to. i don't think
hosting the cite on my end of a residential cable modem would be the
best plan, but if someone else has the facilities i'm happy to
contribute time.

Thanks! Would also love to see the Keynote talk on the History of Plan 9
on video.

looks like I am doing a tutorial on THNX.

Of those coming, who would like to attend?

Can you bring a 2G USB stick? The goal is to get you a usable
environment you can take away with you. I can try to get some sticks
here, but it is better if you can bring one.

Let me know

I can't get sticks here after all, they are ridiculously over priced.

Sorry.

Bring a laptop to the tutorial! I can't supply them either :-)

Any requirements on those sticks other than size? Is there a
difference between bootable and non bootable?

I think it doesn't matter whether or not the sticks can be bootable,
as any hard drive can have an MBR. I know what matters is whether or
not the computer in question can boot from USB devices. Look in the
machine's BIOS settings. I have a 1GB stick with U3 on it, but if I
had a larger stick without any software I could just copy my emulator
hard drive to it. The emulator software comes with that ability, and
the ability to go the other way around :-)

I did not think that bootable was "special". I hope not. If you can
put an MBR on it, it should work.

The size is really the size of sdC0, which is 1.6 or so GB. I don't
like venti-less plan 9 systems.

Another way to shrink down is to use an image we have on there that is
a true terminal, and mounts root from somewhere on the net. This is
pretty unbearable to use, but maybe cfs makes it all better?

So you can technically get this back to 512MB if you toss the sdC0
image on the flash, but you may not like the result.

Be sure your laptop can boot from USB. That's needed. If we get
desperate I guess we can burn a boot CD. Or, transfer the image to
HDD.

So this is not going to be me up there with powerpoint. It's pretty
hands on. And Aki is going to help, right, Aki?
