  CD's that "Lock"

Author: PaulRS
Date: Dec 26, 2008 14:57

I use several commercial CD's with information in PDF format. When I
place them in the CD Rom Drive after accessing them (Even with a
Directory command), I cannot get them out - they "lock" themselves in.
The "Properties" for the CD-Rom do not list them as locked. Eject
does not work, Clicking on "lock" does nothing. The only way to get
them out is a reboot.

If I put one of these CD's in and DO NOT access it, I can get it out.
Accessing it makes the difference. Am I missing something???

This is OS/2 4.52 FxPk 4

  New release of Workplace Sans

Author: Alex Taylor
Date: Sep 20, 2008 22:38

Version 0.5 of the Workplace Sans TrueType font has been released.
http://users.socis.ca/~ataylo00/creative/fonts/#wpsu

Please read the note below before installing.

Workplace Sans is a light condensed sans-serif TrueType font with Unicode
encoding.

This font has been carefully designed to resemble, as much as possible,
the OS/2 bitmap font "WarpSans". This resemblance is at its best when
displayed on-screen at 9 point/120 dpi, or 11 point/96 dpi.

NOTE:
With version 0.5, I have embarked on a fairly extensive re-tooling of
Workplace Sans. Most of the glyphs are a lot cleaner and more regular
in appearance now (although still not perfect).

I decided to recreate the font file from scratch, and add each glyph as I
redesigned it. Version 0.5 represents the first milestone in this effort.

Version 0.5 of Workplace Sans does NOT support all of the characters that
were included in the previous versions. At present, only the Latin-1
character set (basically, OS/2 codepages 850 and 819) are supported.

Assuming you're referring to cmd.exe, what you want is "ver /r".

Wasn't there a parameter to ver that would report the internal name? eg
2.45 instead of 4.5.

CPU cycles for a worthy cause...

Author:
Date: Sep 16, 2008 01:31

Hey folks...

I'm here to just raise awareness for a really good use of spare CPU
cycles called Folding@home. Your CPU(s) and GPU(s) can become a part of
Stanford University's research into simulating how various proteins
"fold" together and what the effects will be. This research can be
applied to many purposes, such as mapping the human genome or
researching causes of such things as Alzheimer's disease.

*There is no OS/2 client available*, but most OS/2 users have access to
a Win32 or Linux machine to run the software. OS/2 users don't play
games with their machines, and generally use Win32 machines as little as
possible, so chances are we have a lot of spare CPU cycles to give. ;-)

Consider joining the project and joining the "OS/2" team (team 33889).
Maybe if there's enough of us we can ask for a native client.

If you're interested, here's the link to get started and learn about the
project:

http://folding.stanford.edu

(I'm not speaking in any official capacity for anyone, I just think it's
a good use of CPU time.)

Cheers!

  Re: Label printer for eCS

A print server with USB ports sounds like the right ticket since label
printers with USB ports are much cheaper.

  Shared memory problems

Author: MMI
Date: Sep 7, 2008 12:23

Hello,

I'm unable to get rid of the shared memory problems. I use Xfree86/2
to access my Linux server. After some time, I am unable to start apps
and those that complain, complain about shared memory allocation failure.

My system is eCS 1.2MR with 1G of RAM and virtualaddresslimit of 1024.
Xfree uses ~90M of memory and Theseus reports ~380M largest free shared
memory block. I don't get it. It looks as if I were running out of the
handles, not the shared memory itself. But there aren't any, are there?
I am somewhat at a loss what to do. Theseus free memory report really
bugs me.

Cheers,
Martin
