Re: VirtualBox v2.1 and os/2 guest

Author: S.SubZero

- I never saw ECS be able to install in Virtualbox. It always TRAPs
on booting the install CD on resource.sys. On the Virtualbox.org
forums there's a long workaround involving installing on real hardware
and then migrating it. It sounds like a HUGE hassle.

- OS/2 4.52 should install fine on VBox, as long as hardware
virtualization is enabled in BIOS and in Virtualbox. If your CPU does
not support hardware virtualization, you cannot use an OS/2 guest.
(this is covered in the PDF that comes with Virtualbox)

- I run an OS/2 4.52 guest in Virtualbox on a Core 2 Duo platform
without problem. It's insanely fast. The SB16 support isn't very
good tho. It's static-filled and not very usable. The AC97 audio
sounds better, but isn't MMPM/2-capable so it requires different
controls to do things with it.

Utility to pop up a window when a file exists?

Author: Al Savage
Date: Sep 22, 2008 22:12

I have an "uploads" dir on my server. It isn't used much, and I don't
manually check it unless someone emails me to let me know that they
uploaded something.

I'd like a utility checks that dir every minute or ten minutes or hour,
and when it finds a file in that dir (any file), it pops up a window to
the foreground to let me know.

In particular, I do NOT want the utility to make any noise.

This sounds like a REXX script to me. Is there a canned script that
does something like this?

Regards,
Al S.

  Viirtual machines and os/2

Author: Jim Moe
Date: Sep 9, 2008 11:45

Hello,
Given my recent experience with new hardware and the growing lack of
support for os/2, I have been looking at solutions that employ virtual
machines. The preferred configuration I have in mind is Linux as the host
OS with os/2 running in a virtual machine.
My requirements are:
1. Integrated mouse - no need to select or deselect mouse capture
2. Access to the host filesystem
3. Network
4. Clipboard
5. Sound
Is this possible?

I have experimented with a few VMs with no success so far. Parallels
(won't install, missing components), VirtualBox (no integration), VMware
(won't install os/2), Xen (does not see the os/2 install disk as bootable).
I even tried VirtualPC on Windows. It ran the installation disk, but
claimed the result was unbootable :-(.

  Driver for nvidia mcp61?

Author: Jim Moe
Date: Sep 7, 2008 14:07

Hello,
I have a ASUS m2m-mx se+ motherboard with the nVidia nForce 730 (mcp61)
chipset. One of the functions of the mcp61 is a 10/100 Ethernet NIC.
Does an ecs/os2 driver exist for that NIC?

Ever since they've updated the server I can't download files.
Whenever I click on them I am prompted for a user name and password.
Has it become subscription only?

  Video driver options for os/2

Author: Jim Moe
Date: Sep 3, 2008 14:10

Hello,
My computer's motherboard (asus a7n8x) recently stopped functioning. I
replaced it with an asus m2n-mx se+ and an AMD Athlon X2-64 (AM2) CPU. The
GPU is an onboard Nvidia GeForce 6100.
The SNAP v3.1.8 video driver crashes the system when it attempts to
start up. So I installed GENGRADD which at least allows me to run at
1600x1200 like I had with the ATi Radeon 9550 video card, although only at
16bit instead of 24bit color.
GENGRADD is abysmally slow, even with the 2.5GHz CPU. (I haven't tried
setting up for the dual core yet.)
I tried Panorama v20070427. My choice of video resolutions: 640x480x8.
No other choice was allowed even if selected; I selected 1024x768 (the
maximum shown!), rebooted, got 640x480. I did attempt v20070920 but the
WarpIn installation failed with an explanation...

Firefox 3 ignores system dialog fonts

Author: Marcel Müller
Date: Aug 31, 2008 04:10

Hi,

I just upgraded to Firefox 3.0.1 (from 2.x). It works as expected so
far, except for one thing:
All dialogs use Times Roman font with unreasonable whitespace below and
above each line. This blows up buttons and menu controls significantly.
In some cases the text of the previous line is overwritten, e.g. the
cookies list.

Does anybody else experience the same problem? And is there a work around?
