I'm still waiting for for my super-threaded OS

Author: thebored

Some day we will switch to polycore processors(100x 1ghz core) and we
will need highly distributed computers with high speed connection to
other computers. Data transfer will be entirely encrypted, parity
checked, and all streams will be able to have full par2 like block based
p2p DHT. Media sources will have variable bitrates that can flex with
your connection speed. Distributed media will become the norm.
We need a new paradigm shift. We need a new Linux, approached from the
beginning to make it proper and distributed. And for that, we need a
better langauge, erlang, haskell, limbo, what have you. We need a
language as easy to write and understand as ruby with just as good of a
standard lib. And it needs to be distributed.
The time is near... and it will be free software that will...

  Document Assembly Software

Author: AlanM
Date: Apr 29, 2008 12:37

Greetings,

I'm looking for information on automated document assembly. Basically,
I'd like to be able to:

1. Give the system a topic and have it search through various data
sources (Web search engines, Image search engines, online journals and
periodicals, etc.)

2. Compile a topic outline based on selected relevant search results.

3. Use the resulting outline to assemble a document using verbage and
images from the most relevant results.

Please let me know if you've heard of such a system or if you know an
appropriate Usenet group to post this message to.

Thanks!

  Operating Systems list or FAQ.

Author: so_o2
Date: Apr 24, 2008 17:08

Hello!

I think there used to be a
list of Operating Systems or
a FAQ with a list of O.S.es.

Does this exist?
Where can I find this?

Else, wouldn't it be nice to
have an O.S.es list of the
actual and maybe also the
older/deprecated O.S.es?

Every month new
systems are created,
hardware and software.

Customary, too.

I calculate, there are always
more and more Operating Systems.
How many are "born" each year,
how many do disappear?

  Decidability of Deadlock Detection

Author: Sherif Fadel
Date: Apr 2, 2008 04:04

I have a question on the decidability of deadlock detection. I heard a
speaker at one of the conferences I attended mention that the general
deadlock detection problem is Turing-undecidable. I was wondering about the
validity of this statement. I did some checking around and it seems that
*predicting* the occurrence of deadlock in the system, using e.g., static
analysis, is Turing-undecidable since it can be reduced to the Halting
problem. I was wondering whether it this is also true for the deadlock
detection problem. I know for a fact, from personal implementation, that it
is possible to design deadlock detection algorithms for reusable resources,
using cycle or knot detection in the general resource graph depending on the
resource request model. I also know that it is difficult...
