  Prob w/ virtual terminals

Author: zeno
Date: Feb 29, 2008 10:42

I am running Ubuntu 7.10 on an IBM ThinkCentre and am unable to invoke
a virtual terminal from the GUI; all I get is a blank screen, although
I can return to the GUI with ctrl-alt-f7. I think it may be a Ubuntu
bug having to do with framebuffers but am unable to get any good info
from the Ubu people. Can anyone provide info or some fix?
TIA

Geoffrey

Since you aren't just a point-and-click guy, I'd go for Slackware.

I would like to invite you to islam ,i know it`s weird to recieve such
a mail from somone you don`t know, but actually it`s important that
each person on the planet of earth to receive the universal message, &
the last one, which is islam.

i know that you may have some doubts about islam , or maybe you never
thought about it, but actually when you discover the beauty of that
message, which isn`t only a religion or faith to have it in the heart,
it`s a daily practicing thing, that you can`t stop thinking of.

it doesn`t prevent you from doing your usual things, on the contrary,
it does encourage you to keep practicing them , & not preventing
yourself from anything, only prevents you from doing things that may
harm you or harm others.

also ,the entertainment activities you like to practice, may cause you
to gain a reward by doing them, because it simply releases your energy
& directs you towards positive things, & prevents you from negative
things.

Winbind reports different uid's for same users on different Linux servers

Author: Nico Kadel-Garcia

I had planned to use Winbind to do account management for a bunch of
Windows users on my RHEL 5 systems, but find that even after
successfully joining an Active Directory domain and using Winbind to
authenticate, the uid for the same Winbind user is different on
different systems.

The only difference I can find among the servers is the use of "passdb
backend = tdbsam" on systems that I've attempted to register to the
Windows Domain with the "net ads keytab" command. Is this required for
trusted Kerberos authenticating servers? Would should I use, ideally,
to set a consistent uid/gid across my hosts?

I'm running Debian Lenny on my main server at home. As well as hosting all
my files (which are backed up and easy to move to a new server), it does a
ton of other things:

  EXT3FS checking error

Hi everybody,

My system is set to perform filechecking every 64 mounts. (tune2fs -c
64 ) But when checking (e2fsck) this is done, several error messges
appear like this:

Extended attribute block has reference count , should be
Fix?

where:
is a 7 digit integer number;

Why are there errors in the file system if ALWAYS is shut down
properly?

  Bulletproofing a Linux server

Author: Ignoramus24141
Date: Feb 25, 2008 09:13

I am building a server and I want to make sure that it is
"bulletproof", which, to me, means that it can last a long time and
survive adversity without too much attention and would have a great
uptime.

It will be hosted in a datacenter, and I do not want to visit it too
often. My current server is 3+ years old, and I saw it exactly once
during this time, when I added extra memory to it.

The server is still around, but its drives are not mirrored and in
fact paired with a big partition that spans them both. (dumb idea) So
I am in a precarious position. Plus it is too slow.

The new server, I want to last 5 years comfortably.

To that end, I have or plan on the following features.

1. Three pairs of mirrored drives managed by a 3ware controller (disk
reliability)

2. Active CPU Cooling (with fans)

3. Use cpufreqd to reduce CPU speed if overheats anyway despite active
cooling

4. Use smartmontools to monitor hard drives

Linux, Windows Server 2008 and authentification

Author: Roger Eriksson
Date: Feb 25, 2008 00:49

Hi all

We are currently running a couple of old Windows Server 2000-computers as
Active Directory domain servers against which we authenticate some Linux
(Red Hat AS 4 and 5) servers. We are now in the progress of updating the
Windows servers (yes, we do need them unfortunatelly) and the choice is
between Windows Server 2003 and 2008.

But, we've had some troubles with updates on the W2kS regarding the
authentification from Linux and I am afraid of jumping on MS newest
creation. Are there anyone who have tested the W2k8S and Linux combination?
