  Printing PDFs through CUPS

Author: flimflam
Date: Sep 19, 2008 15:26

Having some trouble printing PDFs through CUPS (v1.2.4 on CentOS 5 and
same behaviour is occuring on RHEL5).

The PDFs are being created through the PHP PDFlib (7.0.3) and the
printer is a Datamax I-4212 label printer printing onto a roll of 4x6"
labels. I also have the rastertodpl filter installed.

Printing a PNG image to the printer works properly.

Printing a CUPS test page to the printer works properly.

Printing one of our PDFs (created at 4x6", confirmed in the file
properties in Acrobat) however prints out two labels with the printed
data appearing half off the side, and also over two labels - ie: it's
printing as though it's being centered on an 8.5x11 legal size
(defaulting?) rather than actual 4x6 media size.

This happens via lp with all the -o media=w288h432 type options as
well as via a PHP IPP class (where it's actually intended to be
printed from).

I've also just confirmed that a PDF saved via Acrobat behaves in the
same way as though it's going onto letter papersize.

Anyone have any ideas?

when is the file /etc/profile and /etc/environment loaded

Author: luckyrandom

I use the mldonkey-sever, which started by /etc/rc2.d/S98mldonkey-
server. And the locale is set in the file /etc/profile:

export LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8

However, it seems that the file /etc/profile has not been loaded when
the mldonkey-server starts. As a result, mldonkey don't use the right
locale, and the file names which include Chinese characters are
encoded wrong.

Certainly, I could change the S98mldonkey-server file directly and
also ugly. But I don't think it's a good solution. Hence, I'd like to
know, when and how are the file /etc/profile and /etc/environment
loaded, and where is the right place to set the system wide variables
such as locale.

Samba still won't start because of vmware

Author: CRC

Hi:

openSuse 10.3, VMwarePlayer-2.0.4, samba-3.0.26a

I have the problem that even if the /etc/init.d/vmware service runs
before the smb and nmb services, smb fails because the vmnet1
(192.168.230.1) interface created by vmware fails to appear before samba
tries to bind to it.

The reason I think this is the correct explanation is that after the
system boots, smbd and nmbd are not running, and the syslog shows them
complaining that the interface didn't exist. I then run them manually
and they work fine. But I don't want to have to run them manually all
the time.

I need a way for the boot process to wait until vmnet1 is known to
exist, before the smb/nmb services are run. The only thing I have done
at present is put this in /etc/init.d/vmware:

# X-Start-Before: smb nmb

distros that don't set library links (ie .so -> .so.1.2.3)

Author: charlie
Date: Sep 12, 2008 16:06

Hello knowledgable folks,

I've got a basic question about shared libraries on Linux: Shouldn't
there always be a link from .so pointing to the particular version
installed/used? For example, I recall Mandrake linux a few years ago
shipped 9.x without such links, and nothing compiled until you
manually went through and created the links, or wrote a program/script
to do it.

Now am having the same problem on Suse linux. Half the libs are so.1
etc, ie specific version only, without the link from .so -> .so.1.2.3,
for example. Is this considered a bug, or what?

Am working on a system that don't have root priveleges on, so normally
the solution would be to make the links in my $HOME and set
LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include the directory where those links exists, but
the installers I'm working with switch shells and what-not so that the
env variable is lost.

But my basic question is: Shouldn't distros create those links during
installation?

Thanks
Charles
