Generic USB 2.0 hub showing up as USB 1.1

Author: Yousuf Khan
Date: Dec 29, 2007 13:39

I have two generic 4-port USB hubs that are supposed to be USB 2.0
compliant. The older one is fine, works as advertised. Meanwhile the
newer one sometimes shows up under the USB 2.0 root hub (i.e. "Standard
Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller"), or usually it shows up under the
slower "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller" (USB 1.1).

My motherboard (Asus M2NPV-VM) USB ports are all USB 2.0 compliant, and
they individually auto-detect whether they need to switch down to USB
1.1 speeds. I'm using a Microsoft tool called UVCView under Windows XP
to display the details of the USB devices, including the hubs and roothubs.

According to UVCView, the older hub and newer hub seem to have the same
chipset vendor (idVendor = "Genesys Logic, Inc."), although externally
they look quite different and have different brand names. So I'm not
sure why one would be consistently USB 2.0 compliant, while the other
one is not.

Yamaha PSR-E313 : accessing flash memory with linux

Author: vyk
Date: Dec 29, 2007 12:43

Hi,

Recently I got a music keyboard Yamaha PSR-E313. It has an onboard flash
memory for storing user MIDI data, 99 songs maximum. According to the
manual, these data can only be written from a PC via a MIDI connection
using a special Windows program called MusicSoft Downloader. The problem
is that I have no Windows but only Debian (etch) linux on my home PC.
Debian works quite well with my PSR except for it cannot access this flash
memory. I tried to run Downloader in wine but it didn't work out :-(

Could someone tell me whether it is possible to write data to PSR's flash
in linux?

I'm using a MIDI-USB interface (MIDI jacks connect to the keyboard and the
USB jack goes to the PC).

Probably it's too wild to say but is it possible to mount the keyboard's
memory via MIDI-USB interface similar to the way in which USB memory
sticks are usually mounted?

Thanks
VK

Recommendation for storage system hardware (mainboard, controllers)

Author: Wolfgang Draxinger
Date: Dec 29, 2007 03:17

For a NAS system I'm going to build for a photographer¹ I'm
looking for a mainboard, that provides at least four PCI-Express
4x slots for SATA2 or SAS controllers. CPU Socket may be either
940 (AMD Opteron) or 775 (Intel Core 2). There shall be no fancy
OnBoard stuff, like multimedia hardware.

No need for PCI slots, though having one (but not more) may come
handy for POST-80 diagnosis.

Ideally the board has IEEE1394 (FireWire) connectors, to connect
external HDDs used for backup.

On the storage side I want to use Linux Software RAID, since this
makes the system independent of a hardware vendor's RAID
solution and is more flexible to configure. So what I need are
SATA2 or SAS controllers, that provide very good I/O throughput,
but hardware RAID functionality is not needed. Of course they
should be Hot Plug capable (the swapping works in my experience
quite well in the Linux software RAID) and are well supported by
Linux.

And then of course the harddisks, for which I need of course
reliable ones (ideally 750GB capacity or more).

what is shutting off my computer?

Author: Bob Tennent

When I try to do something computationally intensive (such as lame
encoding), my system shuts down. I think it's because a bad thermistor
is producing high readings. Even when the system is 100%% idle, the CPU
temperature is 61°C according to lm_sensors. The "high" value is 80°C,
and I believe the system shuts down if the CPU utilization goes too
high, even if the real temperature is much lower.

Can this be fixed by editing a configuration file or turning off the
broken thermistor?

Instead of disabling HW and stopping services, let's say for gaming,
create a Hardware Profile.
Right click on My Computer - select Properties. Select Hardware Tab,
then click Hardware Profiles.

  -64bit Ubuntu or 32bit?

Author: darkblueB

Hi All-
I just got an HP slimline with an AMD 4000+ on sale. The motherboard
has room for 2gb max of ram (which I bought with the order). Which
Ubuntu ??

* I will run primarily Postgres 8.2x, PostGIS, Perl and Python, along
with a specialty program called GDAL. I will have some decent sized
DBs loading and searching. (to me thats, hm, 1.8m records in a simple
flat table as the largest so far. Other large'sh tables in the same
DB)

* I configured another Ubuntu box for work, which has more RAM and I
went with the 64bit. I want to synch files between these two as much
as possible. Including DBs.

* I will run the new one headless, but with the full desktop install,
using Remote Desktop/VNC occasionally

* I build apps from source, install python and perl modules to write
against, and other modest hacking

* My Linux experience is LOW, though I am a programmer

thanks for any tips
-Brian

largest amount of RAM cache (non ECC or ECC)

~
I was wondering about what is the largest amount of RAM a reliable
X86 motherboard (preferably a I32 one) can take.
~
There are mobos out there with 4 RAM slots, so buying 1Gb sticks will
easily give you a 4Gb box, but I wonder what would people do when they
need more RAM in a regular X86 box
~
Also, does the difference in performance between ECC and non-ECC
memory justify the difference in price?
~
Thanks

MI5 Persecution: BBC Newscasters. Lie & Deny They're Watching Me

Central to the persecution campaign waged against me for. some nine years
now by the Security Service is their use of the media,. and in particular
the broadcast. media, to make clear to me that I am under surveillance and
being watched within my own home, even by BBC newscasters. while they read
the news. This is really an act of arrogance;. MI5 and their tools in the
television and radio. are so sure that they can never be caught, that they
have many. times made explicity clear on broadcast programmes that they are
as capable of seeing me as I am of seeing. the broadcast pictures. Even
when they have known I am taping the programmes they still. carry on this
practice; for examples of TVand radio. presenters caught "in action", see
the Evidence area of. my website.

If you wish to reply to this. article......
then please include your name and fax number! I provide the. means for
recipients to send me. their thoughts on the topics discussed, but ask that
you provide me with your fax number or email address if you. require a
response. Also would you please send not more than one. or two pages, if by
fax.. Thank-you!

It started with a Newscaster, and it continues. with Newscasters today

M-I'5.Persecut ion ` Fo ur Ye ars of MI5 Pe rsecution Pos ts on Int ernet Newsgroups

Four. Years of "MI5 Persecution" Posts on Internet Newsgroups

For approximately the first three years of the MI5 persecution,. from June
1990 until late 1992, I. kept as quiet as possible, in the hope that by not
reacting, MI5s interest in me would decrease and. they would simply go away
of their own accord. This. is the sort of behaviour some people employ
against bullies; if the bullies arent getting. a reaction, then they might
simply go away and victimize. someone else.

Unfortunately, this tactic didnt work. The quieter I became, the. more
shrill and hysterical. the noise from the Security Service operatives. For
about two years I didnt watch TV news. at all. Yet this only heightened
their obsessed fixation; they continued to follow me. wherever I went, they
continued to induce harassment at work by. managers and fellow workers, and
they continued to encourage me to commit suicide. They. seemed to regard my
refusal to react as a crime which they would have to "put. right" by ever
more extreme forms. of abuse.
