In 1989 a great tradition started with GHP (Galactic Hacker Party),
which continued four years later in 1993 with HEU (Hacking at the End of
the Universe), HIP (Hacking In Progress) in 1997, HAL (Hacking At large)
in 2001 and finally WTH (What The Hack) in 2005. We want to continue
this tradition in 2009 with another great outdoor hacker event.

The name is HAR: Hacking At Random 2009.

[/quote]

HAR is planed somewhere in August 2009, It's not clear or the event will
be held in The Netherlands or Germany.

I was considering the Asus EEE 1000 but it was too small. The Lenovo
Thinkpad R61 looks promising. Any opinions?

Simon Cooke does not deserve any sympathy. Over the years
he has posted many hundreds of lies and insinuationss about
GNU/Linux and its creators. The only possible purpose of his
actions was to deceive people into not trying the software.

Why Open Access for Textbooks is Inevitable

,----[ Quote ]
| A "world without IP" does not imply that everyone ends up digging ditches: it

Dr. Matthew King testifies about WorldVistA EHR

,----[ Quote ]
| VistA is the aspirin of EHRs and if it was a drug, every provider would
| prescribe it. But just like generic aspirin, there are no “drug
| representatives” or lobbyists to sell it. Its effectiveness is clearly
| supported in the literature, but administrators don't have time to read the
| literature. So they listen to the sales pitch and the lobbyists. In the
| healthcare industry, that could cost lives.

Open Source vs. Proprietary Intranet Software, Part 1

,----[ Quote ]
| At first glance it might seem like a no-brainer: Get your intranet software
| and its source code for free or pay big bucks for proprietary, closed source
| software. But deciding to adopt either open source or proprietary software
| must go beyond the issue of money.
|
| [...]
|
| Open source software, licensed under a free software license such as the GNU
| General Public License (GPL), represents ultimate freedom. It represents
| flexibility and control over customization and distribution, minimizing
| vendor dependency and lock-in, avoiding restrictive and costly licensing
| agreements, and reducing total cost of ownership. In short, deciding one’s
| own software fate.
