Don't forget that $25 billion in cash and short term investments.
They also have a $4 billion advertising budget that buys a lot of good
press. In addition, they use their control over trademarks very
aggressively to control almost $20 billion in OEM advertizing budgets.

The primary movers and shakers in the technology world over the past
12 months have been Apple and Google. With its share price up nearly
135%% last year and over US$6 billion in revenue, Apple has gone from
strength to strength....
Last year Google reported a more-than 50%% gain in third-quarter
revenue to $4.23 billion compared with $2.69 billion in the same time
the previous year. With a number of new services planned for 2008,
analysts predict that shares in the company could reach $1,000 from
the present $680 mark....
Software giant Microsoft has been struggling to persuade users to
switch to Vista, its latest incarnation of Windows, as a number of
compatibility and security issues continue to plague the operating
system. It hopes the release of Service Pack 1 early this year will
help to smooth out the initial glitches and people will slowly start
to move from XP.

It's going to happen. Some time in 2008, SCO will finally stop
thrashing on the floor and die.... I'd bet on Novell doing SCO in at
the District Court with a lead pipe.
...SCO's death by suicide--what else would you call suing IBM and other
Linux-using companies without proof, or as Novell has shown, without
even actually owning Unix's IP (intellectual property)?
[Questions:]
"What will Novell do with Unix?" I don't know, but what I'd like them
to do is to open-source as much of the code as they can. There's still
some goodness left in Unix that hasn't been duplicated in Linux. For
example, even generic Unix System 5 Release 5 can handle up to 32
processors and terabyte-sized files and does extremely well at multi-
path I/O.
[But hard to open source all of unix, contains copyrighted code...]
Since Novell is a Linux company, it makes perfect sense to me if they
were to cherry-pick Unix for its best code and release it to the
public. If they elect to go this route, I'd expect to see the first
code appearing within a few months of SCO kicking the bucket.

Pardon me if this is OT, but I know there are some very knowledgeable
people here and I'm kind of under a time crunch and I can't seem to
google this, so:
I need to generate a list of installed programs/packages on a ubuntu
box.
On my rpm based distros, I just do rpm -qa > file_list and it's done.
Thanks in advance.

MSFT is blocking certain older file formats as unsecure it's been
reported--why not add Linux to the list? After all, Linux is open
source and open source means anybody, in particular a hacker, can gain
access to the innards of a file and hide a virus in it. Further,
since Linux OS kernel is open-source, a hacker can disquise the virus
to become an integral part of the OS--and no virus checker (not that
Linux has any virus checkers, that's how primitive it is) can spot it.
Linux reminds me of the early days of the Internet when a Columbia
University math professor's son designed a worm that clogged the Net
for a few days--this was about 15 years ago--and it was because the
Net at that time was "open source' meaning everybody, including the
bad guys, could easily shut the net down.
Another reason to fear open source IMO.
(Yes, yes, I know, I'm a troll, but that doesn't address the issues
above. Rex Ballard, comments?)

I just went shopping for USB FLASH DRIVES and found a good deal on TOSHIBA
brand USB-4GTR's at OfficeMax.
The really neat part is that the display card, where is says, "OS
Requirements"... Linux is listed. :')
The really humorous part of my shopping spree was the walk down the "windows
OS isle"... Shelves and shelves of Windows Vista... collecting dust. When
I asked the sales person about the sales of Window Vista packages... she
said they're only on display because they have to be there. Now, that's
a "WOW FACTOR" if I ever heard one. As for ZUNE and Vista powered
laptops... yeah, they sell them... but they always come back...
Hehe! Amazing...

Even though I'm an HDTV fanatic, it wasn't until this past weekend
that I finally made the jump to an HD monitor....
Unfortunately, Hollywood isn't quite as thrilled about my new HD Media
Dream Machine and they've decided to punish me by revoking my Watch
Now privileges from Netflix (NFLX).
[He finds he cannot use new monitor without agreeing to have his DRM
"reset"...]
Before nuking my entire digital library, I decided to call Netflix's
technical support, to see if I could get to the bottom of my C00D11B1
error message.
When I called them they confirmed my worst fears. In order to access
the Watch Now service, I had to give Microsoft's DRM sniffing program
access to all of the files on my hard drive. If the software found any
non-Netflix video files, it would revoke my rights to the content and
invalidate the DRM. This means that I would lose all the movies that
I've purchased from Amazon's (AMZN) Unbox, just to troubleshoot the
issue....
