Can you folks recommend a multi-port MIDI interface that is well
supported under Linux (ALSA) ?

re-wire Limitations and cross platform writing

Author: Dewittian

In sonar 7 I have Reason available to run in re-wire
mode. When I pull down softsynths there's no link to run Finale' in
rewire mode. Has anybody ever run Finale orchestra from inside Sonar
and let the tempo map in sonar sync it up? I'd sure appreciate the
help.

I bet that not even in pro-tools Finale can be used as a re-wire
device?

I'd like to
either score from within Finale and bring in audio tracks or record in
sonar and re-wire finale to back it up. The problem with starting in
finale is that it is too weak to mix from and cumbersome to control
tempo changes and MIDI events. The current project requires the music
to be led by my fast acoustic guitar picking background and then I'm
going to add a lead instrument like an oboe, flute, or viola playing
the main melody. I don't even have the main melody written yet and
get far more inspired melodies when I write in Finale.

Here is confirmation that Apple users are stupid.

The MIDI input shows up in apple's Audio MIDI Setup and Garageband. But
I'll be damned if I can work out how to use the KB to produce music in
Garageband. Garageband's help and several google searches have turned up
nothing useful :-(

Why is Apple making this so hard? There's no useful info at all.

TIA,

Getting a MIDI to play back in just intonation instead of equal/even temperament

Author: Leftover Notes
Date: May 22, 2008 14:58

I'm a member of a barbershop chorus. The ideal barbershop sound uses
"just" or "pure" intonation. This is a harmonic tuning that only
instruments capable of producing continuous variable pitch (voice,
strings, trombone) can easily use. Any instrument with pitched stops
(which is most of them) would have to be retuned from the ground up
for each key change, which is obviously completely impractical, which
is why musicians generally agree to use the "compromise" of equal
tuning, which is "close enough" for most purposes.

I'm looking into producing learning CDs for our chorus using Sibelius
or Finale to make MIDIs of our music, but the end result would be a
lot more useful if the MIDIs would play back in just intonation rather
than the default equal tempered. Neither program will do this
automatically (which I think is serious lack, but oh well.)

  no MIDI settings?

Author: Linea Recta

I recently started using a new notebook with Vista Home premium installed.
Now I'm at a loss about MIDI settings. Can't find any MIDI settings under
soundcard, nor is it mentioned anywhere in help.
Am I getting blind, or is MIDI functionality simply removed?

  MIDI...modern technology...and some spit...!!!

Author: Lookingglass

Here is a song that I wrote in 1982.

Recently, I created a MIDI arrangement for it. I decided to take it a step
further and, with the assistance of two *on-line* friends at
REC.MUSIC.BEATLES, we recorded the song SANDY, made a video, and posted it
to YouTube. All done by e/mail cross-country...San Francisco to Maryland to
Houston Texas.

Link to video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdjPPmjUDPo

A link to the unvarnished genesis of the song and the original MIDI...in
addition to other original MIDI compositions...

Midi sync issues between a Korg D888 and Boss DR880 - more hardware required???

Author: Stoo
Date: May 13, 2008 12:38

Hi there,

Im trying this group out of desperation. The problem Im facing is as
follows:

Im trying to sync my Boss DR880 drum machine with my Korg D880 hard
disk recorder. The Korg can only act as a master device, so I
connected up the Midi out of the Korg to the Midi in of the DR880 drum
machine and set the DR880 to listen for Midi.

The problem is that the DR880 does not respond at all to the Midi Time
Code (MTC) sent from the Korg. I called up the Roland support to find
out if the DR880 accepts MTC and the support desk told me that it
doesnt. They told me it supports Midi clock (MC).

So the question is, is there a way around this? Is there some device
that can transform Midi Time Code (MTC) into Midi clock (MC)? I need
the most cost effective solution!

Thanks to anyone who can spread a little light !
