num.analysis doesn't appear to be a newsgroup, so I'll start this discussion
in c.l.f., to which it has relevance.

## contract22.pl
## contraction in perl

use strict;
use warnings;

my $number1 = 42;
my $toploop1 = 2.71;
my $bottom1 = 2.71;
my $diff = 2.71;
my $power = 2;
my $base = .5;
my $comp = -.00057;
my $alpha1 = -.00057;
my $alpha2= -.00057;
my $avg = -.00057;

$power = $power - 1;
$comp = $base**$power;

One such group is sci.math.num-analysis but I don't know if there are
others.

It is very likely a spamming technique. This newsgroup has a
reputation as a serious group. A spammer, posting an announcement
for "free answer books" will then be taken seriously by many
innocents, primarily students.

They then post requests to the newsgroup, effectively filling it
with spam, while the original poster is busy laughing at the
gullibility of other human beings.

The best experimental cure for this is to ignore all such messages.
