I was once turned down by a Rochester company (GRS) EXPLICITLY for not
having a degree *ANY DEGREE*. The interviewer explained that they needed
evidence that the prospective employee could "persevere to completion of
a long term goal". I realized later I could have used that as a opening
to show how I could (and had) "persevered".

As for you immediate problem -- eating without sponging off someone,
walk into nearest temp agency saying "I'm ready willing and able to
work". Demonstrate it by accepting job they offer -- being a janitor is
honorable employment. I did it when needed. You can too!
