from each other and to jointly find promising ways ahead for
the future.

Morning,
I am looking for feedback on a the "NC Product Design Directory" at
http://www.ncproductdesign.com
If you get a chance, please take a look and let me know if you you
have any comments (or suggestions), especially in the following areas:
- ease-of-use
- look and feel
- operations
- picking an ad from the list of vendors once you have selected a
category (or sub-category)
We want to make sure that the directory accomplishes the following:
- providing immediate value to a subcriber (i.e. firm or consultant
placing the ad)
- providing long term value to a subscriber (i.e. firm or consultant
placing the ad)
- providing immediate value to a reader
- providing long term value to a reader
Do you have any suggestions on how to improve the directory's
performance in any of the areas above?

Studentships for PhD study in
the School of Informatics at
the University of Edinburgh
---------------------------
FIFTY research studentships are available for:
* UK students
* EU students
* students worldwide
Many of these are full studentships, paying your tuition fees and a
stipend of 12600 pounds to cover living expenses in your first year,
rising in second and third years. The rest pay your fees and/or a
contribution towards living expenses. Payment of fees for non-EU
students is subject to successful competition for an Overseas Research
Student award. PhD students are encouraged to make contributions to
teaching, for example by leading tutorial groups, and for this you can
expect to earn an additional 500-1000 pounds per year.

Hello
I am a part time post graduate student with the Open University, doing a MSc
research project on a proposed mobile phone location disclosure/shared
calendar privacy user interface.
As part of the project's data collection activities I am conducting a survey
to gain a greater understanding of users privacy preferences.
I would be grateful if you can take about 10 minutes of your time to fill
out the survey at the link below:
http://www.my3q.com/home2/117/hughwp/63699.phtml
(No personal data is collected)
Thank you for your interest.
Regards
Hugh

Hi,
HCI most of the time focuses on tips and guidelines. It investigates
user experience, mental models, conceptual models, metaphor, user
performance in accomplishing tasks.
But considering industrial use i don't feel how it goes on with actual
Gui design. How to properly model interaction with user. UML as far as
i know do not address GUI design. There is no commonly used models to
abstract from particular platform. I think user interfaces are build
using drag-and-drop technique, sketches and most of issues are not
modeled, but just kept in mind by GUI programmer.
Am i correct ? Can anyone point out proper direction. Is there either
UML extension or any other technique (that is popular) used to describe
and model interaction between user and GUI. Any visual languages that
facilitate building model of GUI and could be used to automatically
generate code, GUI from model (that could be XAML, XUL, HTML files).

Kind regards,
llapinski

Four screens. If you can't handle four screens, you should try
playing in 3 poker games at once. With this strategy you need
only optimize your interface for one game == one screen. And
that would be a good way to start. You will pardon me if I
have confused your example with the real problem to be solved.
Hope that helps.

The scrollbar is well known for its ineffectiveness to pinpoint an item
in a very long list (e.g. a dictionary or encyclopedia index). I
propose that the user could scroll his mouse wheel (middle button) at a
scrollbar position to zoom in/out there. In the zoomed-in mode, an
additional gauge is displayed beside the scrollbar, showing the current
min, max, PageUp/PageDown step length and position value. From another
point of view, this equals adding an "altitude" property to the
original scrollbar.

Yao Ziyuan
