USING THE IBM LOTUS EXPEDITOR MICRO BROKER MQTT CLIENT TO PUBLISH
MESSAGES | Lotus developerWorkds
Learn how to use the IBM Lotus Expeditor micro broker to support the MQ
Telemetry Transport (MQTT) publish/subscribe messaging protocol. Create a
sample publisher, publish to a topic, and verify the receipt of the message.
Messaging middleware provides reliable and flexible connectivity services in
the context of a business integration solution. One of IBM's many messaging
middleware technologies is MQ Telemetry Transport (MQTT), a protocol
supported by the Lotus Expeditor micro broker. MQTT is a TCP/IP-based
publish/subscribe messaging protocol, designed for communication over low-
overhead networks. The micro broker is a small message broker (less than
2 MB
of Java code) that is designed to be deployed on small, appliance-type
devices, often at locations remote from the enterprise data center. In this
article, you create a sample publisher that is capable of connecting to a
Lotus Expeditor micro broker, publish to a topic, and verify the broker's
receipt of that message. By the end of this article, you are equipped with
the knowledge required to create a simple MQTT publisher for your business.

Vista plodding along six months after release | CNN Tech

Chris Pirillo leaned away from his webcam and pointed to his
printer/scanner/
fax machine, which stopped scanning and faxing after he installed Microsoft
Corp.'s new Windows Vista operating system. "I can't live in Vista if the
software that I use in my life for productivity does not work," said
Pirillo,
in the third minute of a 52-minute video he posted on YouTube. Nearly six
months after it launched, gripes over what doesn't work with Vista continue,
eclipsing positive buzz over the program's improved desktop search, graphics
and security.

Experts warn of lightning-strike injuries with iPods | CNN Tech

Listen to an iPod during a storm and you may get more than electrifying
tunes.
A Canadian jogger suffered wishbone-shaped chest and neck burns, ruptured
eardrums and a broken jaw when lightning traveled through his music player's
wires. Last summer, a Colorado teen ended up with similar injuries when
lightning struck nearby as he was listening to his iPod while mowing the
lawn.
Emergency physicians report treating other patients with burns from freak
accidents while using personal electronic devices such as beepers, Walkman
players and laptop computers outdoors during storms.

Google's battle for wireless spectrum | CNET

The 700MHz spectrum, which has been used to provide analog TV service, is
considered the last piece of prime real estate left among wireless airwaves
because it's able to travel long distances and penetrate walls. Everyone
from
mobile operators to public-safety companies to Google sees the spectrum as a
perfect opportunity to extend mobile broadband services.

Hot property -- Web domain names | CNN Tech

Inside a midtown hotel, Larry Fischer is on his cell phone with a financial
backer as his partner Ari Goldberger does quick research on a laptop
computer.
They are bidding furiously at this auction of Internet domain names, with
hopes of snagging megayachts.com. The duo won't be deterred. They want this
name. "$110,000, yes or no? Quick," Fischer barks at Eli, the investor
at the
end of the phone. Someone else makes a bid for $120,000. Fischer and
Goldberger
up the ante, and then again. Going once, going twice ... sold to Fischer and
Goldberger for $150,000. "You got it," a smiling Fischer tells Eli.
Mazel tovs
are exchanged.

WiFi Hybrid Cell Phone: T-Mobile HotSpot @Home | NY Times

It’s called T-Mobile HotSpot @Home, and it’s absolutely ingenious. It could
save you hundreds or thousands of dollars a year, and yet enrich T-Mobile at
the same time. In the cellphone world, win-win plays like that are extremely
rare. Here’s the basic idea. If you’re willing to pay $10 a month on top
of a
regular T-Mobile voice plan, you get a special cellphone. When you’re
out and
about, it works like any other phone; calls eat up your monthly minutes as
usual. But when it’s in a Wi-Fi wireless Internet hot spot, this phone
offers
a huge bargain: all your calls are free. You use it and dial it the same as
always — you still get call hold, caller ID, three-way calling and all the
other features — but now your voice is carried by the Internet rather than
the cellular airwaves.

Japanese to build operating system for cars | CNN Tech

Honey, I’m just going to go boot up the car... The Associated Press reports
today that 10 Japanese auto-makers - including Toyota (TM), Nissan (NSANY),
and Honda (HMC) - are teaming up along with their government’s Ministry of
Economy, Trade, and Industry to develop a standard operating system for
automotive electronics, dubbed JasPar. Cars, of course, are getting to be
increasingly sophisticated, with even low-end models carrying
micro-processors
that manage everything from fuel-injection and braking to the dashboard
lights.

IBM Battling 2 Overtime Lawsuits at Once | eWeek

In the span of a few month, IBM has been hit with two overtime lawsuits from
former employees. The first was filed July 9 and the second was filed just
last week. The most recent suit, filed July 20 in the U.S. District
Court for
Eastern California by John Bennett, Bill Graham, and Peter Stanger is a
class-
action lawsuit on behalf of all current and former sales representatives
within the state of California. Three IBM salesman claim they regularly
worked more than eight hours a day and more than 40 hours each week without
their required meal and rest breaks, and claim that they are entitled to
overtime compensation.

Cisco Invests $150M in VMware | eWeek

VMware, on the eve of its highly anticipated initial public offering, finds
itself with a new partner and investor—Cisco Systems. On July 27, the two
companies announced that Cisco will invest $150 million in VMware and
receive
about 1.6 percent of the virtualization vendor's common stock. The
investment
also means that VMware will appoint a Cisco executive to its board of
directors after the IPO is formally announced later this year.

The 8 Hottest IT Management Jobs Today and Into 2008 | CIO Insight

The demand for experienced, savvy workers to fill these positions remains as
strong as ever—and the pay isn't bad, either. More than halfway through
2007,
the demand for IT managers of all kinds continues to exceed supply. And this
trend figures to persist well into 2008. Not surprisingly, managers with
extensive experience implementing and maintaining vendor-specific
applications
and operating systems such as Microsoft .NET, and pretty much anything
related
to SAP, are seeing their salaries rise well above the industry average,
employment industry experts say.
