Turning a blind eye on NSA wiretap aid | CNET

A new Senate bill would protect not only telephone companies from lawsuits
claiming illegal cooperation with the National Security Agency. It would
retroactively immunize e-mail providers, search engines, Internet service
providers and instant-messaging services too.

Leopard OS on sale October 26 | CNN Tech

Apple Inc.'s next-generation operating system, Mac OS X "Leopard," will be
available October 26 for $129, and Apple's online store is taking
pre-orders,
the company said Tuesday. Leopard was originally due in June, but Apple said
in April that it needed to divert resources so it could launch the much-

International hackers going after U.S. networks | CNN Tech

About 140 foreign intelligence organizations are trying to hack into the
computer networks of the U.S. government and U.S. companies, a top counter-
intelligence official said. Joel Brenner, the national counterintelligence
executive, told CNN it is not accurate to blame only the Chinese government
for recent penetrations of government computer systems. "We get intrusions
from all point of the compass. It is really misleading to focus on one
country," he said. "They are coming from everywhere now. It is a
pervasive problem."

Toyota takes baby steps to plug-in car | CNET

Questions about expense, reliability and profitability are good reasons for
Toyota to take its time on a plug-in electric hybrid, a company
executive said
Monday. Yoshitaka Asakura, project general manager in Toyota's hybrid
vehicle
system-engineering division, said Monday in an article in The Wall Street
Journal that Toyota is taking into account that not all consumers, despite
vocal environmentalist groups, may be interested in a car that has to be
re-charged daily.

Are Microchip Tags Safe? | CNN Tech

You may not know what RFID stands for, but you're probably using the
technology on a daily basis. RFID (that is, radio frequency identification)
is in passports, in electronic toll-collection tags, in credit cards,
metrocards, library books and car keys. Like conventional bar codes, RFID
chips store and relay information, and allow for the identification of
commercial products — and, now, of house pets and people too. Human
"tagging"
was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2004 to facilitate
retrieval of private medical records, but the procedure has had few takers.

Apple loosens grip on iPhone software | CNN Tech

In an apparent about-face, Apple Inc. will allow third-party applications to
work directly on the iPhone, Chief Executive Steve Jobs said in a posting on
the company's Web site Wednesday. Apple infuriated developers and some
iPhone
users when it issued a software update September 27 that disabled unofficial
programs installed on the handsets.

Good vibrations in nanotube research | IBM

IBM scientists have measured distribution of electrical charges in tubes of
carbon that measure less than 2 nanometers in diameter, 50,000 times thinner
than a strand of human hair. The technique provides a better
understanding of
the electrical behavior of carbon nanotubes, a material that could lead to
smaller, faster and lower power computer chips.
