ever. IBM offers solutions that automate tasks between teams, make
communication easier, resolve problems faster, and document results so
everyone stays on the same page. Tune in to this enlightening full-length

Is there green in 'misfit' technologies? | CNET

Global warming spells bad news for polar bears, tropical nations and many
crops. But it just might give a boost to some less popular networking
standards. Utilities and appliance makers are trying to come up with ways to
save energy by reducing household power consumption, and part of the answer
may lie in some networking standards, such as Zigbee, and power line-based
communications that have so far seen only limited adoption.

IT companies move in on Romania | CNN Tech

Romanian programmers, such as Pohontu's team, are among the most
sought-after
in the world as large international IT companies turn to the east European
country to take advantage of strong computing and language skills
coupled with
cheap labor. Its computer literacy is not without its dark side -- the
country
has an unenviable reputation as a hotbed for computer fraud and a large
community of hackers. But legitimate IT is one of Romania's fastest growing
export sectors with turnover of about 1 billion euros ($1.38 billion).
Roughly
90 percent of some 1,000 IT companies in Romania are foreign-owned and the
government hopes exports will reach 1 billion euros in the next couple of
years. In February, Bill Gates opened a Microsoft Corp. technical support
center in Bucharest. The investment followed, among others, the launch of a
development center by Amazon.com Inc in the university town of Iasi in 2005.

Is flash memory facing a physics crisis? | CNET

Flash memory will take over the world, if the laws of physics don't get it
first, according to one of the technology's biggest backers. On one
hand, NAND
flash--the kind of flash found inside digital cameras and MP3 players--is
crushing the competition, Eli Harari, CEO of SanDisk, said on Wednesday
at the
Flash Memory Summit here. NAND has made 1-inch hard drives obsolete.
Then it's
n to 1.8-inch hard drives and possibly larger 2.5-inch notebook hard drives,
Harari said.

a supplier of software used to automate computer data centers, at $14.25
each, a 38.6 percent premium to Opsware's closing price of $10.28 on Nasdaq

Spock: Search's final frontier? | CNET

What newbie Web 2.0 company wouldn't want to become the next Google? Easier
said than done, of course, and if you had a nickel every time you heard that
prediction for a start-up, you'd be in Eric Schmidt's tax bracket. But if a
Google could come out of nowhere to blast past Yahoo, why can't another
unknown emerge to eat Google's lunch? Nobody at Spock is making that bold
claim just yet--the invitation-only search service went live only this
morning.

Apple homeward bound with new iMacs, iLife | CNET

Apple's fourth major event of the year was a bit more understated than the
previous ones, but provided another glimpse of the company's view of the
personal computer. Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled new iMacs with aluminum and
glass exteriors, keeping the rumor mill honest this time. Apple's iMac is an
all-in-one computer where the motherboard sits behind a flat-panel display,
in a more streamlined approach to the traditional desktop PC.

Stiff Fines Prompt Amex to Bolster Money-Laundering Vigilance | eWeek

Besides paying a hefty fine, the bank will be instituting new safeguards to
prevent money-laundering. American Express Bank International learned an
expensive lesson when it agreed on Aug. 6 to pay a stiff penalty to the
federal government after admitting that it failed to install and
maintain anti-
money-laundering software at its Miami office. The bank, which has about $1
billion in assets, must fork over a whopping $65 million, including $55
million in restitution and $10 million in penalties to the Department of the
Treasury, as a result of negligence in its banking and compliance
practices.

block it, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission said in a notice. Last month,
Google said it planned to buy Postini to expand its package of online
