LEAD STORY

LOTUS NOTES 8 BASIC VS. STANDARD JAVA VERSION | Lotus

The system memory requirements for running the Lotus Notes 8 client with the
Java-based interface are higher than those required for running previous
versions of the Lotus Notes client. It is accepted that not all
organizations
will have the required workstation specifications throughout their
organizations and therefore might not be able to upgrade to the Lotus
Notes 8
client with the Eclipse-based interface configuration at this time. However,
for organizations not able to take advantage of the Java-based interface
configuration, it is still possible to install the Lotus Notes 8 client
without this interface, or to install the Lotus Notes 8 client with the
Java-
based interface but not to load the option until the workstation has been
upgraded to the required specification. The system requirements for this
configuration are the same as those for the Lotus Notes 6.5/7.x client.
Certain functions and features will not be available with the Lotus Notes 8
"Basic Configuration." The full list of features and their requirements is
listed in Appendix A, "Lotus Notes 8 client feature requirements" on
page 145.

LOTUS NOTES 8 COMPOSITE APPLICATIONS SCREENSHOTS | Lotus
Rapidly assemble new applications -- IBM Lotus Notes and Domino 8 software
makes it easier to integrate line-of business (LOB) solutions and data into
new types of applications, called composite applications. Composite
applications, which are experienced at the front end of a service-oriented
architecture (SOA), aggregate components on the screen to present content
from multiple systems in single context for the end user. Featured
capabilities: Assemble different components -- Provide specific
functions and
access to information from multiple sources: Lotus Notes databases, Java
applications, the Web or a customer relationship management application.
Improve individual and organizational effectiveness -- Enable
interaction and
collaboration in the context of the business processes and LOB applications
that your employees use every day. Mix and match components in multiple
composite applications -- Allow developers to create a wide variety of
applications with a small set of services - without writing code. Boost
return
on investment by leveraging your existing technology -- Utilize your current
infrastructures like IBM WebSphere Portal and Lotus Domino.

LOTUS NOTES 8 PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS SCREENSHOTS | Lotus
IBM Lotus Notes 8 software includes a set of office productivity tools which
support the Open Document Format (ODF) standard. These productivity tools
include word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation capabilities. Lotus
Notes users will be able to create, manage, edit, and import documents
in ODF.
The IBM productivity tools can also import and edit Microsoft Office
documents
and export those documents to ODF for sharing with ODF-compliant
applications
and solutions. Open standards means you don't need to worry about end of
life
uncertainties or expensive, ongoing software licensing and royalty fees --
providing you the opportunity to save money and reduce your Total Cost of
Ownership. IBM Lotus Documents - Create, edit, and share word processing
documents. IBM Lotus Presentations - Create and deliver presentations. IBM
Lotus Spreadsheets - Create spreadsheets and analyze numerical data.

Which Democratic Candidate Will Limit H-1Bs? | TechsUnite.org

The H-1B visa issue surfaced in the presidential campaign yesterday during
National Public Radio's (NPR) Democratic Debate (www.npr.org), when one
of the
debate moderators asked the candidates if they are for or against expanding
the H-1B visa program. If tech workers raised their hopes that these
candidates would understand the issue, then those hopes got dashed. Not only
did the responses tout the corporate line that education is solution,
but also
stated misinformation about how the program actually works.

Commodore 64 still loved after all these years | CNN Tech

Like a first love or a first car, a first computer can hold a special
place in
people's hearts. For millions of kids who grew up in the 1980s, that first
computer was the Commodore 64. Twenty-five years later, that first brush
with
computer addiction is as strong as ever. There was something magical
about the
C64," says Andreas Wallstrom of Stockholm, Sweden. He remembers the day he
first laid eyes on his machine back in 1984. "My father brought it home
together with a tape deck, a disk drive, a printer, and a couple of games...
I used to sneak home during lunch to play [on it] with my friends." Millions
of Commodore 64s were sold in the 1980s.

Death goes digital: The electronic tombstone | CNN Tech

No one would set a scrapbook filled with pictures and memories on the
tombstone of a loved one. But what about a high-tech, weatherproof version,
with digital images powered by a solar cell? That innovation is
available now
-- but finding customers so far has proven slow going.

Keeping up with the Simses (SimCity Game) | CNET

The original SimCity, which came out in 1989, was the brainchild of the now-
legendary game designer Will Wright. The game, which gave players god-like
powers to create their own cities, was a huge success and, after several
sequels, eventually led to The Sims, a game that some at EA didn't
believe in.
But as is now well-chronicled, The Sims became the most-successful PC
game of
all time, vaulting Wright into a level of celebrity and power he still
maintains to this day.

Survey tracks nation's shift from landlines to cell phones | CNN Tech

More than one in eight households have cell phones but lack traditional
landline telephones, according to a federal study released Monday that
tracks
the country's growing dependence on wireless phones. The data, reported
twice
a year, suggested that the number of households relying solely on cell
phones
may be growing more slowly than it had in the past. But the researchers said
the slowdown might be due to changes in their survey, including altering the
order of some questions and some of the wording.
