BEST PRACTICES FOR LARGE LOTUS NOTES MAIL FILES | Lotus developerWorks
Learn how you can manage the ever-growing mail files of your Lotus Notes
users, conserving your system resources while ensuring your Notes users
continue to enjoy high performance and reliability. Many companies have
found
that their employee’s Lotus Notes mail files continue to grow, and are
looking
for advice in controlling the performance costs associated with these larger
mail files. As a result, IBM conducted studies of the characteristics of
large
and active mail files. These mail files contained large numbers of
documents,
and documents with attachments. We also looked at the impact related to
frequency of searching, full-text indexing, and whether mail documents are
filed or kept in the Inbox.

DEPLOYING IBM LOTUS CONNECTIONS: INTEGRATING WITH OTHER SYSTEMS | Lotus
developerWorks
Part six in our article series focuses on integrating Lotus Connections with
other systems using the Atom API. This article is intended for I/T
specialists
and developers and is helpful when exploring options to integrate Lotus
Connections into your applications. Working with Web applications today
requires accessing information dynamically in an open and platform-agnostic
manner that allows data and process integration. The Atom Publishing
Protocol
(AtomPub) is a mechanism that meets this requirement, providing a
standardized
way to work with components. It is an application-level protocol for
publishing and editing Web resources, and it is supported in these IBM Lotus
Connections features: Activities, Blogs, Communities, and Dogear (in
Profiles,
only reading is supported). This article is an introduction to working with
Lotus Connections through its Atom API.

Double check e-mail | CNN Tech
The software that monitors your office communications is getting more
sophisticated. Whenever a doctor, nurse or administrator in Georgia's DeKalb
Medical Center sends an e-mail, the message detours through a special box in
the three-hospital system's computing cluster. The box analyzes the e-mail,
scanning for sensitive information like patient names, prescription
histories
and Social Security numbers.

Core competencies for chipmakers | CNET
It's a big day for AMD, which is launching its Barcelona chip at last. Then
Intel comes along with an earnings surprise. AMD's Barcelona party
kicked off
Monday night in San Francisco, and the relief was palpable on many
faces. The
company formally unveiled Barcelona, AMD's first quad-core server processor,
during an event spread over two buildings in San Francisco's Presidio
district.

Apple sells 1 millionth iPhone | CNN Tech
Apple Inc. sold its millionth iPhone over the weekend, days after it slashed
the price by a third to spur sales. The milestone was reached weeks earlier
than expected and sent shares of Apple up $4.94, or 3.8 percent, to $136.71.
The stock regained some of the ground it lost after the price cut spooked
investors as a sign of weak demand and slimmer margins.

NASA launches new weapon against forest fires | CNET
On September 7, NASA launched the Ikhana unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from
Dryden Air Force Base to take a series of smoke-free images from the Lick
wildfire near Gilroy, Calif. After sending images of the Lick fire, the
drone
was flown over Oregon and Washington to observe 10 other fires before
returning after a 20-hour mission.

Battery-like device could power electric cars | CNN Tech
Millions of inventions pass quietly through the U.S. patent office each
year.
Patent No. 7,033,406 did, too, until energy insiders spotted six words
in the
filing that sounded like a death knell for the internal combustion
engine. An
Austin-based startup called EEStor promised "technologies for replacement of
electrochemical batteries," meaning a motorist could plug in a car for five
minutes and drive 500 miles roundtrip between Dallas and Houston
without gasoline.

Utility will use batteries to store wind power | CNET
American Electric Power, a coal-burning utility company that is looking for
ways to connect more wind power to its grid, plans to announce on
Tuesday that
it will install huge banks of high-technology batteries. The batteries are
costly and their use at such a big scale has not been demonstrated, but they
may be an essential complement to renewable power, experts say.

Proposed satellite radio merger: Boon for consumers or monopoly?
On his long commute to the office, George Doty snakes through Houston,
Texas,
accompanied only by the two satellite radios on the dashboard of his
Chevrolet
pickup truck and the hum of whatever he has playing. A two-year
subscriber to
both Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio, Doty has the luxury of
listening to a little bit of everything, which he says he does. "Depends on
what mood I'm in, or what mood I want to get in," he said of the more
than 300
radio channels at his fingertips. Soon however, Doty may need only one
satellite radio subscription.

Reshaping the architecture of memory | CNET
he ability to cram more data into less space on a memory chip or a hard
drive
has been the crucial force propelling consumer electronics companies to make
ever smaller devices. It shrank the mainframe computer to fit on the
desktop,
shrank it again to fit on our laps and again to fit into our shirt pockets.

A giant leap: Robots or astronauts?
Can everyone be an astronomer? It certainly seems that way, especially with
some of the latest tools at our fingertips, like Google Sky, which allows
Internet users to navigate through a digitized map of space. But some say
virtual astronomy is not just for amateurs and should also be the way
forward
for professional space exploration. A future of virtual astronauts, too.

HP's inkjet tech seeks to replace hypodermic needles | CNET
What else can inkjet technology be used for? Injecting drugs into humans,
according to Hewlett-Packard. The company is licensing a medical patch
it has
developed to Ireland's Crospon that potentially can replace hypodermic
needles
or pills for delivering vaccines or other types of medication to
patients. The
patch contains up to 90,000 microneedles per square inch,
microprocessors and
a thermal unit.

Earthlink: Could VOIP be the answer? |
Fortune.com
A few days ago Earthlink (ELNK) announced a big restructuring that includes
900 layoffs and a rethinking of its fledgling business building WiFi
networks
with cities. A lot of news outlets and bloggers are raising questions about
the future of so-called Muni WiFi. But what about the future of
Earthlink? The
company started in the days of dial-up Internet access as a more
sophisticated
alternative to AOL (which, like The Browser, is part of the Time Warner
(TWX)
family). As consumers migrated to broadband services offered by phone
companies and cable operators, Earthlink, like AOL, got squeezed.

IBM prints with molecules | CNET
Think of it as an atomic rubber stamp. Researchers at IBM and ETH
Zurich have
devised a way to print patterns with molecules. Using the technique,
particles
are precisely arranged on a soft, rubbery template. A glass or silicon plate
is laid on top of the soft template, and the particles transfer to the glass
or silicon.

Why We Haven't Stopped Spam | eWeek
Opinion: Even very smart people are misinformed on this subject. Here's
a clue:
If it were easy to fix, it would have been fixed already. Several years ago
when Bill Gates declared that the spam problem would be solved within two
years, he appeared to be thinking of SMTP authentication as the heart of
that
solution. I wouldn't have said what he said, but I was pretty optimistic
too.
Not anymore. The overwhelming power of inertia seems too much for any
solution
to take on. People just won't stand for the inconveniences that fixing spam
would bring.

Health insurer turns to technology to zap fraud | IBM
According to estimates from the federal government and issues-based groups,
each year some 10 percent of US healthcare expenditure, $170 billion, is
lost
to fraud, waste and abuse. Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, a non-profit
company
that delivers health care coverage to 2 million people across upstate
New York,
