Studentships for PhD study in Informatics@Edinburgh

Author: Don Sannella

Studentships for PhD study in
the School of Informatics at
the University of Edinburgh
---------------------------

FIFTY research studentships are available for:

* UK students
* EU students
* students worldwide

Many of these are full studentships, paying your tuition fees and a
stipend of 12600 pounds to cover living expenses in your first year,
rising in second and third years. The rest pay your fees and/or a
contribution towards living expenses. Payment of fees for non-EU
students is subject to successful competition for an Overseas Research
Student award. PhD students are encouraged to make contributions to
teaching, for example by leading tutorial groups, and for this you can
expect to earn an additional 500-1000 pounds per year.

  xv intensity modification behaves weirdly

Author: Dubious Dude

xv allows you to modify the intensity of a grayscale image by generating
specifying a curve that defines the mapping from original grayscale
value to new grayscale value. This works find using X-windows on
Solaris. I can't seem to do this under 2 usage scenarios.

In the first usage scenario, xv still runs on solaris, but with the
DISPLAY being set to a TightVNC server. I was connecting in from a VNC
viewer on a PC. When I try to use the spline points to define the
grayscale translatio curve, the curve would form in highly unpredictable
manner. This was some time ago, so I can't do any experimentation on it
now, but I do recall launching the VNC server and veiwer with various
parameters to avoid the problem. Nothing seemed to work.

In the 2nd usage scenario, xv is the binary precompiled for Intel PCs.
I used Cygwin's X-windows. The symptoms are the same as the above.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks.

  Animations on a CD

I may not want a full DVD but what I do want, embedded in the audio of
a CD I buy now, is animations or xml files of dance syntax to control
avatars. Is there even a well defined xml format for human dance,
taking account of non-rigid bodies?

I'm sure the audio quality should still be OK with embedded data, but
I'm fed up with the supplied visualizations of my media players.
Failing this I'm sure the visualization designers could come up with
something better than swirls or sheep.

Also, not exlusive to CD, but any audio format, perhaps.

How to add transparency when pnm->png in netpbm?

Author: Josef Moellers

Hi,

While making DVDs from TV recordings, I occasionally want to add a menu
to the disk. I give Spumux three images which all show the same text but
with different colors (I chose black, red and green) on a transparent
background. Until now, I have used gimp to create three identical images
with different colors of the text, but this is quite tedious and,
occasionally, error-prone.

I thought I'd just generate the black text on a transparent background
and then use netpbm to change the color on the command line. As I
couldn't find a utility which changes just one color, I wrote a q'n'd
Perl program which does the job on a pnm file.
So I create one menu image (e.g. the black text on a transparent
background) with gimp, and save it as a png file, run it through
pngtopnm, and then run my utility over it to generate two additional
files (with red and green text, keeping the background color as given).

Now I'd like to convert the two new pnms into pngs with transparency. I
have found out that pngtopnm apparently outputs transparent pixels as
having color 0/3/0 (I could use ppmhist to find out which...
