[ANN] Daily pyogp coders meeting (PYthon Open Grid Protocols for virtual worlds)

Author: Lawson English
Date: Jul 15, 2008 06:24

pyogp is a Python-based virtual worlds test harness and client library
being developed by Linden Lab, makers of Second Life, and members of the
SL Architecture Working Group, in order to test the Open Grid Protocols
that were used in the recent "proof of concept" demo by IBM and Linden
Lab, that allowed avatars to teleport from one virtual world (Second
Life) to another (Open Simulator) using standardized interoperability
protocols.

http://www.informationweek.com/news/personal_tech/virtualworlds/showArticle.jhtml...

A daily meeting within Second Life has been setup for pyogp coders and
designers to meet, as described in the announcement below. This is the
transcript of the first meeting:

http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Pyogp/Chat_Logs/Daily_Meeting/14_jul_2008

The pyogp meetings are open to any "resident" of Second Life, and any
Python coder with a desire to contribute to the process is certainly
welcome.

preliminary flowchart for universal virtual worlds login

Author: Lawson English
Date: Jul 3, 2008 01:51

If anyone ever wondered at how an internet protocol evolves over time,
here's the first stab at a universal avatar login protocol for multiple
virtual worlds: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/OGP_Draft_Login
preliminary testing is being done in Python.

The establishment of credentials (name/password) need only be done
once per avatar though various worlds may require another level of
credentialing on a per-world basis. Teleportation between worlds will
modify this protocol slightly. The main difference is that for
teleportation, the avatar's client will evoke a "de_rez_avatar" process
for the current world and then proceed with the rez_avatar process, as
shown in the flowchart. Secondary login might be required to gain
admittance to a specific destination world.

While the details of the current implementation are very
Second-Life-centric there is no reason why a more generic version of
this protocol can't work with any existing or future virtual world, if
the implementers so desire. Note that with further tweaking, the
protocol will allow visual representation in realtime of the destination
region/world, which will allow Second-Life-like walking/flying between
regions and worlds as well as seeing your destination during teleportation.

[ANN] Update on Python-based Second Life client library (pyogp)

Author: Lawson English
Date: Jun 28, 2008 14:01

Pyogp is the Python-based library being developed by Linden Lab, makers
of Second Life, and the programming community of the users of Second
Life under the auspices of the SL Architecture Working Group, in order
to test and implement open protocols designed to allow anyone to create
their own virtual world servers and clients compatible enough with
Second Life so that avatars can travel to and from SL and other virtual
worlds, keeping identity and inventory intact.

https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Pyogp
irc://irc.freenode.net/#pyogp

Pyogp is starting to take shape. We've got several developers from
Linden Lab contributing code as part of their job, as well as increasing
participation from the SL community.

We've standardized on using ZCA as the component architecture and are
fleshing out the framework to handle the new inter-operability protocols
as well as legacy protocols to allow pyogp clients to be used with the
current Second Life and OpenSim servers as well as future virtual world
architectures.

[ANN] Virtual Worlds Open Grid Protocols testing library in Python (pyogp)

Author: Lawson English
Date: Jun 20, 2008 14:10

A new open source project has been started by Linden Lab, makers of the
Second Lifeâ„¢ virtual worlds, and the Second Life Architecture Working
Group (AWG) to test LL's proposed virtual worlds Open Grid Protocols
(OGP) that will allow any virtual world to support multi-world login,
between-world teleport and other transportation mechanisms, as well as
asset/property and currency sharing between worlds.

https://wiki.secondlife.com/w/index.php?title=AWG_Test_Harness

The code is released to all comers in Python under an Apache v2
agreement, although contributions require the signing of Linden Lab's
developer contribution agreement (giving LL equal copyrights to the
original contributer--a boilerplate LL corporate requirement that likely
is redundant given the nature of Apache v2).
