10Gb Ethernet on Intel Mac, Myricom 10Gb Eth vs. Cisco Catalyst 3560E X2 CX4/MMF

Author: Frantisek.Rysanek
Date: Jul 23, 2008 00:28

Dear Everyone,

I'd appreciate any practical notes/recommendation/warnings on the
following combination of hardware (and operating system drivers):

We're eyeing some 10Gb Eth adapter cards to be used in MacOS X on an
Intel Mac. The two brands that seem to have drivers for the MacOS are
Intel (3rd-party driver by Small Tree) and Myricom (own driver). We're
planning to attach that to an existing Cisco Catalyst 3560-E series
switch, via the X2 modules available from cisco: either metallic CX4
or the short-range 850nm multimode fibre.

Two questions:

1) do you have any experience with Myricom 10Gb against Cisco Catalyst
switches ? (I assume Intel would work like a charm, the brand size of
Intel and Cisco and the public PR claims of love between the two
brands just make me believe so) Any specific notes regarding the Cisco
and Myricom CX4 metallic and SFP+ vs. X2 multimode optical transceiver
compatibility?

2) do you have any notes regarding Intel+SmallTree or Myricom 10Gb
Ethernet boards under MacOS on Intel Mac? Driver issues, performance,
general compatibility...

How to open the hood on this D-Link Ethernet switch?

Author: Frantisek.Rysanek
Date: Jul 21, 2008 05:19

Dear everyone,

apologies for a question that's more hardware-related than networking
related...

I have a D-Link DGS-1216T Ethernet switch, in a 19"/1U chassis - and
I'd like to
remove the lid off that one. Warranty and my reasons aside - I'm not
gonna
reverse-engineer anything, nor am I particularly interested what's
inside.
I'd like to mod my switch a tiny bit - a tiny bit missing to
perfection.

  VLAN Filtering

Author: vicky
Date: Jul 18, 2008 23:37

Hello

I've a web link for u

http://www2.rad.com/networks/2006/vlan/filter.htm

here in this page this line is mentioned

Each port is assigned obviously only 1 VLAN ID as it
PVID as otherwise it would be impossible to
decide to which VLAN to associate the data received.

please explain what it means as more than one per port
supported ....

as mentioned in many documents

and in case of primary and secondary vlan case i think for
each port which r of secondary vlan than this ports also assigned to
primary vlan so that that vlan can be access layer 3 devices (web) as
mentioned in rfc 3069
vlan aggregation.

please clerify the point.

Thanks in advance.....

regards

Vikrant

  Questions regarding the AUI concepts

Author: gregg dot drwho8 atsign gmail dot com

Hello!
In the book by Charles Spurgeon on Ethernet, described here.
http://preview.tinyurl.com/5ayt7u

He mentions on page 104 the basics behind the AUI connector. And then
on page 105 there is a blurb there describing the Control Out signals.

While I am not doubting the author concerning these signals, I am in
fact searching for more information to confirm it.

Incidentally he mentions that they were never used.

Incidentally Rich the Amazon page contains your books as a part of the
collection.
