FIFTY research studentships are available for:

* UK students
* EU students
* students worldwide

Many of these are full studentships, paying your tuition fees and a
stipend of 12600 pounds to cover living expenses in your first year,
rising in second and third years. The rest pay your fees and/or a
contribution towards living expenses. Payment of fees for non-EU
students is subject to successful competition for an Overseas Research
Student award. PhD students are encouraged to make contributions to
teaching, for example by leading tutorial groups, and for this you can
expect to earn an additional 500-1000 pounds per year.

Informatics
-----------
Informatics is the study of information and computation, in both
natural and engineered systems. It comprises a vast range of
scientific and engineering endeavour and has enormous economic and
social impact.

Edinburgh University's School of Informatics brings together the
former Departments of Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science and
Computer Science, together with the Artificial Intelligence
Applications Institute. The School possesses a combination of breadth
and strength unparallelled elsewhere in the UK and competitive
world-wide; as an intellectual endeavour it is strikingly original.

The School is the only university grouping in the UK to have achieved
the top 5*A rating in Computer Science in the UK government's 2001
Research Assessment Exercise round, and it is the UK's biggest
research group in this area. We currently have around 250 students
studying for PhD, and around 130 for MSc.

PhD study

PhD study is carried out within one of our six research Institutes:

ANC fosters the study of adaptive processes in both artificial and
biological systems; two themes are the study of artificial learning
systems and the analysis and modelling of brain processes. CISA
undertakes basic and applied research and development in knowledge
representation and reasoning. Through its applications institute
AIAI, it works with others to deploy the technologies associated with
this research. ICCS pursues basic research into the nature of
communication among humans and between humans and machines, using
text, speech and graphics, and the design of interactive dialogue
systems, using computational and algorithmic approaches.

ICSA seeks development of a better understanding of systems
components, both hardware and software, and their integration and
interaction; this involves not only improving their raw performance
and cost-effectiveness, but also making them more connectable and
interoperable, more reliable, more usable and more applicable. The
interests of IPAB are how to link computational perception,
representation, transformation and generation processes to external
worlds---whether real or virtual. The mission of LFCS is to achieve a
foundational understanding of problems and issues arising in
computation and communication through the development of appropriate
and applicable formal models and mathematical theories.

The SP theory - which has been under development since 1987 - is
a radical synthesis of ideas across human perception, cognition and
development, artificial intelligence, computer science, theoretical
linguistics, neuroscience, mathematics, logic, and epistemology. It
is a theory of information processing in all kinds of system, both
natural and artificial, a new paradigm for information processing
which incorporates principles of minimum length encoding pioneered
by Solomonoff, Kolmogoroff, Wallace, Rissanen, and others, but which
is built from new foundations and differs at a fundamental level from
any existing theory or system.

The SP theory has a dual role. It is a theory of engineering, the
basis for a proposed SP machine with applications in artificial
intelligence and in data storage and retrieval. At the same time, it
is a theory of information processing in brains and nervous systems
both at an abstract level and at the more concrete level of neurons
and neural processing.

The theory and its applications - which are the subject of this book -
will be of interest to a wide range of researchers, academics,
professionals and students in computer science (especially artificial
intelligence), cognitive science, human perception, cognition and
development, theoretical and computational linguistics, neuroscience,
mathematics, logic, and the philosophy of mind and language.

The SP theory has a sound mathematical framework but the ideas are
presented in a way that will be accessible to a wide audience,
without being overburdened with mathematical equations or logical
notations.

After the Introduction, Chapter 2 describes ideas and observations on
which the SP theory is founded, that have provided some motivation for
the development of the theory, or are simply part of the background
thinking for the theory. Chapter 3 describes the theory itself and
one of the main computer models in which the theory is embodied. And
Chapter 4 shows how the SP theory can model the operation of a
universal Turing machine and describes advantages of the theory
compared with earlier theories of computing.

In Chapters that follow, applications of the SP theory are explored:
in the processing of natural languages, in pattern recognition and
information retrieval, in various kinds of probabilistic reasoning,
in planning and problem solving, in the unsupervised learning of
new knowledge (with a second computer model), and in the
interpretation of concepts in mathematics and logic.

Further chapters describe how the abstract theory may be realised
with neural structures and neural processes, how the SP theory relates
to some current themes in cognitive psychology and how the SP theory
and projected 'SP machine' may be developed in the future.

An Appendix describes the version of dynamic programming that forms
the core of the SP computer models, with significant advantages
compared with standard forms of dynamic programming.

The socio-economics fields are important for us in order to segment the
labeler population based on different background knowledge, age,
occupation and education.

of people when faced to images of individuals belonging to the same or
to another ethnic group.

IMPORTANT: the user can guarantee her own privacy choosing freely her
own username and password. The data will be treated confidentially and
only for scientific purposes.
Anyway, most of the fields include a "None"
option for those responders that don't want to answer.

3. Once logged in you can start a survey by specifying the place
where you are (home, work or other) and choosing the number of images
you want to annotate in the current survey.

4. By clicking on "Start the survey " you will start the labeling
procedure for the chosen number of images. The following image shows

For each image in the group you have to choose one of the available
options and click on the right arrow in order to validate the current
choice and pass to the next image .
