Dallaire Questions Canada's Human Rights

Author: Tom P
Date: May 13, 2008 21:39

Romeo Dallaire made a passionate presentation before a committee on
Human Rights when he talked about Omar Khadre.

His main point was that by not objecting to the US charges against
Kahdre because he was a child soldier, the Canadian government is
endorsing America's flaunting of International Law. The law applies
equally to all Canadians, whether or not you agree with their actions or
beliefs.

General Hilliare looks like a bafoon compared to Dallaire.

Canada losing moral standing over treatment of Omar Khadr: Dallaire

Canada has sunk to the moral equivalent of al-Qaeda by failing to treat
Canadian Omar Khadr the same way it treats other child soldiers, Liberal
Senator Roméo Dallaire said Tuesday.

Dallaire, who appeared before a foreign affairs committee on
international human rights, said Khadr is clearly a child soldier who
shouldn't be prosecuted by an illegal court system at Guantanamo Bay but
reintegrated into society.

The Omar Khadre affair is a difficult one. In the first place, in western
convention, the use of children in the military is supposedly not permitted.
However, we see certainly in Africa, in Ceylon, and other non-western
nations abundant use of children in war making. In my mind the use of
children in war is wrong.

MGen Romeo Dallaire is correct when he outlines in Western Convention that
Omar Khadre was a child at the time of this alleged offence, and that
anticipated human rights, again by western convention ought to be applied. I
would agree.

It is not that difficult. He was a child soldier and there is
International law governing this situation. You either respect the law
or you don't.

We can not pick and choose which Canadians get our help. When Brenda
Martin's plight in Mexico became a news item, the Canadian government
got her out and flew her home in a hired jet. At the same time we let
those we don't like to face the gallows in the U.S.
