Lawyers seek dismissal of 9/11 charges

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Military lawyers for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the suspected
mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, and four alleged coconspirators are arguing that charges
against their clients should be dropped following illegal meddling by a Pentagon official.

A motion filed late last week before a U.S. war-crimes tribunal at Guantanamo argues that the
case has been tainted by the involvement of the tribunals' legal adviser, Air Force Brig. Gen.
Thomas Hartmann, who was removed from another case because he lacked the required neutrality.

The defendants are to be arraigned June 5 at the Guantanamo Bay Navy base in Cuba on charges
including conspiracy, hijacking an aircraft and murder. The U.S. is seeking the death penalty
for all five men.

In their filing, Pentagon-appointed defense attorneys noted that Hartmann was accused of urging
prosecutors to pursue "sexy" cases and directing them to use evidence that a former chief
prosecutor said was tainted by coercion.

A judge presiding over the trial of a former driver for Osama bin Laden ousted Hartmann from
that case earlier this month, ruling that his instructions to prosecutors suggested that
factors "other than those pertaining to the merits of the case" were at play.

PESHAWAR: The war on terror is not against Islam, but for the United State’s dominance over the
world, Yunus Samad, a senior lecturer at the Department of Social Sciences and Humanities at
the Bradford University in the United Kingdom and deputy director of the South Asia Research
Centre in Geneva, said on Saturday.

Delivering a lecture entitled ‘Islam in Europe and Extremism and Fundamentalism in Pakistan’ at
Peshawar Press Club Dr Samad said, “The war on terror should not be seen against Islam. It is
for US global dominance. Whoever stands up to the US, Americans consider him to be their enemy.”

The British researcher said North Korea - one of the countries declared to be part of the ‘axis
of evils’ by the US was a non-Muslim state. “So, this is proof that the US war on terror is not
against Islam,” he said.

Prof Samad, also a director of the Ethnicity Social Policy Research Unit at the University of
Bradford, said that the US is a powerful country and it is difficult to resist its global
dominance policies, and that countries opposing the US dominance should form an alliance to
resist it.

For years, the mainstream news media has refused to stop idolizing the so-called straight
talking maverick John McCain long enough to question the mental health consequences of the
years he spent as a "special" prisoner of the communists in North Vietnam.

McCain, the presumptive Republican candidate for President, who could one day have his
finger on the "red button," claims the communists subjected him to 5 ½ years of nonstop
indoctrination sessions so intense that he attempted suicide.

Unfortunately for McCain, after his bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire near Hanoi on

Human Rights Centre indicates Palestinian children face sexual abuse and other torture in prisons

The Palestinian Prisoners' Support and Human Rights Centre ADDAMEER, declared that the Israeli
forces have arrested almost 6200 Palestinians since the last Intifada started in September of
2000. 350 of those languishing in prison are children who, against international conventions,
are still imprisoned in Israeli jails and detention centers.

Those youngsters undergo severe punishment and mental stress, living an extremely horrifying
health and mental situation. Being subjected to torture, interrogation, beatings, humiliation,
insults, degradation, and regular terrorizing, "such conditions will affect their mental well
being forever, and will accompany them through their adult life," the report said.

The report published by the Palestinian centre on Friday 9 May 2008 revealed that hundreds of
children were arrested while they were quite young, and detained in prisons. Some of them are
now over 18 and still are imprisoned.

The Israeli occupation is enforcing military rule in those prisons, thus they consider a
Palestinian child of 16 as an adult. They are willingly depriving them of their rights as
children according to International agreements. According to international law, minors should
be protected whilst detained.

There has been much throwing about of brains in the "progressosphere" about George W. Bush's
shocking and unseemly injection of – gasp! – partisanship into his address to the Israeli
Knesset the other day. Evidently this was the first time in American history that a president
has ever indulged in such un-statesmanlike behavior while gadding about in foreign parts. And
what exactly did Bush do, what was this act of unprecedented moral and political depravity?
Brace yourself: he made a remark that could be construed as an implied criticism of Barack Obama.

Now, it so happens that there was indeed a very grave and sinister scandal in Bush's appearance
before the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's founding. But it had nothing to do with
his witless ejaculation of that clapped-out right-wing trope of yore: the "Neville Chamberlain
gambit," in which anyone who fails to evince sufficient eagerness to immediately obliterate
Washington's designated enemy of the day is accused of "appeasement," paving the way for the
next Hitler, etc. No; the real scandal lies elsewhere. But the fact that it was universally
ignored, in favor of starchy outrage over the non-issue of Bush's remark, tells us a great deal
about the clueless – and gutless – nature of so much of what passes for political dissent in
America today.
