System GETVIS

The last couple of days we have received the following message on the console for jobs trying to run in static partitions:

L257I SYSTEM GETVIS SPACE OR DYNAMIC SPACE GETVIS EXHAUSTED

I know I need to increase my System GETVIS via the SVA card through an IPL, but how do I know if it's the 24-bit or the 31-bit that needs to be increased?

We have IPL'd since the last message, so a GETVIS command from the console won't help.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Getvis SVA.

It will show how much 24-bit and 'Any' (includes 24-bit) that you have allocated, how much is free, and the size of the largest contiguous free block of Getvis.

Did you get this in a STATIC or DYNAMIC partition? If from a DYNAMIC partition then increasing the DYNAMIC SPACE GETVIS will be what's needed.

To quote Mark Twain: It's better to have people think you're stupid than to open your mouth and remove all doubt :)

I read the message but really missed that part.

I have been confronted with exactly that at a customer site the last few
days... here is more...

The message is from the early days of dynamics and it is a little
confusing to say the least.

It is caused by PROCMAC which tries to access JOB-variables. It needs
only 4K (or less) of SPACE-GETVIS below. If running in a static this
request is satisfied from SYSTEM-GETVIS.

You might get away with running the job in dynamic- but you are already
extrem low in SYSTEM-GETVIS below- you might as well IPL now...before
you do that- prepare a GETVIS SVA,DETAIL and have a look at the pools
that are extremly out of bounds. (what is out of bounds- no idea: check
when system is up and running smoothly and compare against that).

We found the culprit in our case and it was identified by a pretty high
adress-range in the GETVISS-below pools... we could use the eyecatcher
in the beginning of the blocks to track down the cause.

So the conclusion: this is only the manisfestation of a system-getvis
leak below the line. You have to find that one- otherwise you will end
up with this error again and again.
